#loopback

Things go off the rails fast when Loopback updates break your audio stack. @damashe shares what went wrong and how he recovered (hint: debug mode and uninstalling ARC). We also talk LaunchBar weirdness, smart email tweaks, and small business HR.

Being a #HamRadio guy who plays with all the audio bits-n-bobs, I've been using #RogueAmoeba #Loopback for several months, under #macOS #Monterey to combine the Mac's audio with the input from a USB mixer. Allows me to listen to whatever plugs into the mixer, broadcast and ham, with the #AirPods ...

Great, ffmpeg now setup properly to BuildRoot and video streaming through my in-progress loopback driver. Not having QA environment has kept this one stuck for few weeks.

Morning, Mastodon! I upgraded #Loopback yesterday to the latest version, and now everything either sounds super static-filled when I'm using Loopback audio devices, or there's no audio at all. Other than updating Loopback, I've made no other changes. Help? Thanks in advance.

The #AltText is very, very important for understanding the point of this post.

Because of #HamRadio and #Music hobbies, I have more sources of audio than your average bear might want to hear or manage. So I've got a desktop mixer that connects to my main #MacMini via USB.

Adding #AirPodsPro2 to this pile has been GREAT, thanks to #Loopback from #RogueAmoeba

Behringer Xenyx X1204USB mixer.

Note that I have THREE Mac Minis here. All are Intel Inside (tm). The oldest of these is running Andy's Ham Radio Linux (Xubuntu), and does most of the Ham Radio things I do here involving a computer.

This thing appears as one of the many possible audio inputs to my main Mac, as "USB AUDIO CODEC". (It also shows as an output by that same name, which I rarely use now that I'm doing with AirPods what I'm describing in this post.)

As it's configured right now, none of the input sliders are up except the 6th one, labeled "FM/AM".

The rest of the input sliders, from right to left (just to be weird) are
Mac Linux
HF (FTdx3000 LineOut goes here)
2m/70cm (not used right now, but sometimes I have such a radio in here)
Old Mac (used to be my day-job Mac, and is still occasionally used for stuff)
Boom Mic (not plugged in at the moment)

In the far lower-right of this photo, a JVC car stereo can be seen, tuned to HD1 KCMP, which is the local Public Radio station I'm listening to as I type this.Screenshot of Loopback by Rogue Amoeba. I have one Virtual Device defined, named "Behringer To AirPods".

The Sources of this virtual mixer, for lack of a better term, are USB AUDIO CODEC and Pass-Thru.

The Output Channels are Channel 1 (L) and Channel 2 (R).

The Monitors column at right shows only one, namely Kelvin's AirPods Pro.The Sound icon in the upper-right corner of the Mac screen has been clicked, and it shows I've currently set any Mac-generated noises to output via HDMI to the LG ULTRAWIDE monitor that I'm staring at while I type this.

However, note that even though the Mac's output is to the LG, I'm still listening to the car stereo over the AirPods.

The outputs listed in this pop-up, from top to bottom:
Mac mini Speakers
Behringer To AirPods
LG ULTRAWIDE
USB AUDIO CODEC (the desktop mixer)
Kelvin's AirPods Pro
Screen (AppleTV in the next room)
Shed (AppleTV in the back yard shed, where I spend most of my awake-not-working hours)Another screenshot of the upper-right corner of my Mac Mini, with the Sound Pop-up. In this pic, the selected output is Kelvin's AirPods Pro. I only did this temporarily so that I could show that they are set to Transparency mode.

This allows me to hear my wife calling my name or hurling expletives for whatever reason. I can also hear notification sounds from the Outlook or Mastodon or Discord browser tabs, or from the Teams app.

I'd used #RogueAmoeba software decades ago.

Got my 1st set of #AirPods for light #HearingAid use, but folds into my mostly-Apple network of devices.

What about #Radio ? I dislike constant internet stream. I want real RF. Car Stereo on my desk for #TheCurrent KCMP, & HF rig through same desktop mixer.

Well R.A. #LoopBack is perfect. I can take the #Behringer mixer USB input to Mac & route it to the 'Pods.

Teams audio can hit this same virtual output.

But can GoTo? Hell no.

Finally figured out how to #chromecast audio from non-chromecast capable apps on my #Ubuntu machine (#Plexamp). #Pulseaudio and the pulseaudio-dlna component make it almost as easy to use as #LoopBack on my #Mac

Seriously, the only thing I’m really missing on this machine now is @ivory, and I could make do with an alternative #mastodon app if only there were timeline position sync (there used to be an open one for Xwitter back in the day, would be nice to see something similar for mastodon)

It's been frustrating and fun -- mostly fun -- configuring my MacBook Pro and my new Rodecaster Duo for recording a multi-location . But with a little magic I've finally got it set up to record audio in , audio and video in , and audio on the , all while my cohost is coming in via . All with no echo or appreciable lag.

Great software is its own heaven

2023-10-28

I was initially tempted to blame a bug in one of my third-party @RogueAmoeba audio tools, namely either #SoundSource or #Loopback. But I knew very well it was actually more likely to be macOS itself.

Ended up force-quitting #coreaudiod and #systemsoundserverd in #ActivityMonitor and… sure enough, things were back to normal after that.

Today’s Apple for ya. A picture of software unreliability and untrustworthiness.

Glad to see that someone at @RogueAmoeba is paying attention. Problem fixed in the latest round of updates. (Didn’t just affect #Loopback, I guess.) toot.community/@betalogue/1111

Ok, so still returning the EVO 16, but… also figured out my audio routing problems! #Loopback is the best! And i'm likely going to get the EVO 8 in the future!

#linux #furautils
added a simple #bash #script to my furautils repo to create a #v4l2 #loopback which can be used to feed the same video stream from a webcam/camera (#uvcvideo) to multiple applications instead of just one.

It works for me and has simplified my life a lot, hope it will turn out to be helpful also for you ^^
