#FreeToAGoodHome I have an old PowerBook microphone up for grabs. It's shaped like a first-gen PlainTalk mic, but it has a normal TRS connector on it.

jobs demoing a codeless UI using NeXT/OpenStep's Interface Builder at macworld expo in 1997
making games in Adventure Game Studio taught me how fast games can be built when designers spend their time working on scenes and gameplay instead of coding scrollbar and button behaviour
i admire and get inspiration from hypercard for the same reasons.

i'm trying to implement something similar for my little game construction kit, called Exigy. if you've got UI suggestions on how to do this well, i'm all ears!

a real joy of mine is seeing how other people decorate and design their craft/studio/workspaces as expressions of their personalities and tastes
last week i drove out of town to pick up a stack of NeXTStations. the elderly gentleman who sold them to me built a homelab inside of his garage. the walls were hung with 20 foot tarps to trap the heat in, and a little space heater kept the space toasty
he proudly related that 100% of the computers found in his lab came from provincial government surplus auctions (think e-waste for govt computers), and none were retail purchases.
the machines were purchased at various times over the past 25 years, and sat in his garage for decades until he decided it was time to let them go. on the day i arrived, he was working on an IBM PS/1 486 SX-33 tower, trying to install DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.1
he planned to work on every single machine and sell them one at a time, now that he was retired.
the sgi indy's were definitely his source of pride, and i could see the dollar signs spinning around in his head as he talked about them.
"i'm going to sell 'em for about $2000 each."
i bit my lip and smiled in a hopefully gracious way, thinking: you're out of your fucking mind :)
i ended up hanging out with him for two hours, talking about retrocomputing. i hope there are more folks out there like him out there. it's a weird and fascinating hobby.
Turns out I wasnât getting any video on the Macintosh Plus because the pin that handles video from the motherboard had a broken joint on the analog board. I get a really good image now but the voltages are too low to boot, most likely an issue with the optocoupler which is an easy replacement. #VintageApple #macintosh #vintagecomputer #repair #retrocomputing
so in 35+ years of doing pc repair, i've never seen this before đ
at POST the nextstation complained about a problem with ram slot 6. i figured - hey, probably just a bad ram stick. i'll swap it out and see if it POSTs correctly
i pulled out the ram simm, and a thin shiny thread was stuck to the bottom. i plucked it out and took a closer look.
that's a human hair with two perfectly square ridges in it. the hair was sandwiched between the ram simm and the ram slot in two places.
a blond human pubic hair
it was thick enough to break the contact between the ram and the slot
đ€Ł
and finally - very predictably, the (second) non-turbo sold to me and labeled as "dead/parts" in fact just had a dead battery.
it boots into firmware just fine, and complains about a bad ram SIMM in slot 6.
