Este escarabajo Vesperus xatarti no paraba de moverse, pero el sol y su luz estaban allí. Tuve que hacer más de 100 fotos hasta conseguir alguna interesante.

Dieser Vesperus-xatarti-Käfer hat sich ständig bewegt, aber die Sonne und ihr Licht waren da. Ich musste über 100 Fotos machen, bis endlich ein paar interessante dabei waren.

I finally figured out what that larva I posted photos of a while back is. It’s a Vesperus xatarti, a beetle that parasitizes olive trees—which I’m really not thrilled about, since I’ve got two of them on my property. In fact, over the last few days I’ve spotted several adults in the garden, like this little male here. Spain. Alicante.

Ya se de que es larva cuyas fotos publiqué hace poco. Es de un Vesperus xatarti, un escarabajo que parasita los olivos, lo cual no me hace ninguna gracia porque tengo dos en el terreno de mi casa. De hecho, en los últimos días he encontrado varios adultos en el jardín, como este pequeño macho.

Ich hab endlich rausgefunden, von welchem Viech die Larve ist, deren Fotos ich neulich gepostet hab. Es ist ein Vesperus xatarti, ein Käfer, der Olivenbäume befällt – gar nicht lustig, weil ich zwei davon auf meinem Grundstück hab. In den letzten Tagen hab ich sogar mehrere erwachsene Tiere im Garten gesehen, wie dieses kleine Männchen hier.

¿Algún entomólogo en la sala? No consigo identificar esta larva de escarabajo. Es muy corta y rechoncha. La he fotografiado en la zona de Alicante (España) en el mes de enero.

Irgendwelche Entomologen hier? Ich kriege einfach nicht raus, was das für eine Käferlarve ist. Sie ist ganz kurz und pummelig. Hab sie im Januar in der Gegend von Alicante (Spanien) fotografiert.

I think last year around this time it was warmer. I took these shots of a hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) in mid-flight with my iPhone 15 Pro and a lens for close focusing. North of Alicante.

The wasps have finally completely left the nest by mid-November. All summer long, there was tons of activity with dozens of wasps buzzing around.

In this family, late autumn foraging is all about these little guys, the Tricholoma portentosum, or charbonniers, streaked tricholoma, sooty head,...

We love them in lots of various dishes, from pizza, mushroom risotto, stews, oven fried, pickled as a winter preserve, you name it. They're great in every kind of way but I do have to advice caution not to pick them unless you're a seasoned forager with ample experience what to look for, because there's loads of very, very similar species of mushrooms that can be quite severely poisonous (see addendum).

Since now would be the time to find them in your local forests (northern hemisphere) and if they interest you but you lack experience in correctly identifying them, I suggest joining forces with some local mycologist, perhaps at your nearest mycological club / association / society. These are not the trophy hunter's mushrooms anyway so there's a good chance you'll even make new friends and, at the bare minimum, enjoy your walks in the woods in company. Also important now that predatory wildlife is getting ready for the winter!

Addendum: On top of the two similar inedible or even poisonous species in the Tricholoma genus listed by Wikipedia article linked above (Tricholoma virgatum and Tricholoma pardinum), perhaps even more similar looking mushrooms to Tricholoma portentosum that you wouldn't want to accidentally consume even in the tiniest amounts include Tricholoma bresadolanum, Tricholoma terreum, Tricholoma virgatum, Tricholoma sciodes and Tricholoma josserandii. As they tend to grow in similar conditions at the same time of the year, often side by side to the sought-after ones or in mixed species clusters, I suggest positively identifying each and every single specimen of fungi that you collect.
