🇬🇧 I barely have time to sketch when I’m working in Antarctica, but here’s an exception! ✏️❄️

Marine discoveries of 2024 in the UK:
🐌 Sea slugs
🌿 New seaweeds
🦈 Tope sharks
🐢 Loggerhead turtle

While we may be landlocked, at Shropshire Wildlife Trust we acknowledge the importance of our marine ecosystems and blue nature.

Conservation does work—but we need stronger protections for blue carbon habitats.

Day 6 of #30DaysWild #Nature #UK

I'm a constant reader and often find a theme across fiction & non-fiction.

Currently it's #MarineWildlife more specifically, #octopus

After waiting to borrow the magnificent "Remarkably Bright Creatures" by Shelby van Pelt and enjoying every word, I'm now marvelling at the stranger facts in "The Soul of an Octopus" by Sy Montgomery.

Here's the UK's local octopus:

Really important good news for UK seabirds from the RSPB, on closure of certain areas of English Waters and ALL Scottish Waters, for industrial Sandeel fishing. Sandeel are vital food sources for Seabird chicks.

A protective lobster defends its reef from an inquisitive young intruder.

Have you ever witnessed an older lobster pushing a younger one away from a reef crevice and wondered why? This intriguing behavior is not just a random act of crustacean crankiness but a vital part of their survival strategy. Let’s explore the fascinating reasons behind these territorial clashes in the underwater world of lobsters.

Territorial Nature of Lobsters: Lobsters are known for being territorial animals. These ocean dwellers stake out their own space in the reef, which they use for essential activities like feeding, mating, and seeking shelter. When a larger, older lobster shuns a younger one, it’s often to defend this valuable territory. This territoriality ensures that the lobster has a safe haven from predators and a secure spot for resting.

Resource Competition: In the wild, the competition for resources such as food and shelter is fierce. For a lobster, having control over a prime section of the reef means better access to food sources and a higher chance of survival. By pushing away a younger competitor, the older lobster is safeguarding its access to these critical resources.

Establishing Social Hierarchy: Size, age, and strength play pivotal roles in the social structure of lobsters. Larger and older lobsters are typically more dominant, allowing them to claim the best locations within a reef. This social hierarchy is crucial as it reduces the frequency of serious conflicts within the species, with younger lobsters learning to respect the boundaries set by their elders.

Mating Rights and Dominance: While less documented in lobsters, many animal species use territorial control as a means to secure mating rights. The dominant individual – often the one controlling the prime territory – is more likely to attract mates. This aspect of territorial behavior is a common theme across various species in the animal kingdom.

The action of an older lobster pushing away a younger one is a natural and essential part of their ecological role. It helps regulate population dynamics and ensures fair distribution of resources among these fascinating marine creatures. Understanding these behaviors gives us a deeper appreciation of the complex and often unseen social structures that exist beneath the ocean’s surface.

I shot the video above on a Panasonic GH5.
