1. Using a crystal to provide the atoms required, a "pumping" radiation is introduced to raise most of the electrons to the higher energy levels.

2. The excited elections fall spontaneously to the second energy level (and linger there for a split second).

3. A "triggering" radiation of the correct frequency is introduced, stimulating the electrons to radiate their stored energy. In this way MASER type amplification takes place in the resonating box.

(4) Since the "pumping" radiation is absorbed by ground state electrons, and the "triggering" frequency stimulates second level electrons only, the operations can go on simultaneously. As electrons fall back to ground state they are "pumped" up again, and MASER action is continuous.

- Leute haben schon vollautomatische #Laser - #Luftabwehr - Systeme für < $10k pro Einheit in ner Garage gebaut und neben #Laser gibt's auch noch #Maser als Option...
Und wenn das ein paar Amis mit kommerziell verfügbaren Industrielasern hinkriegen, dann kannste dir vorstellen dass dies für #Rheinmetall keine wirkliche Herausforderung war, und das größte Problem eher die Integration mit den anderen Waffensystemen und das seewasserfeste Gehäuse war.

Brains have the alpha waves, computers have their clocks... and radio telescopes have hydrogen masers (essentially, radio-wavelength lasers) to keep both accurate timing and frequency, which are essential for radio inteferometers such as ALMA to work.
This masers live at 5000 m high at the Chajnator plateau, so the work itself is challenging!
