Very timely arrival of what must be the bible on the history and materiality of capacitors, surprisingly rare, over 500 pages with more than 2000 references, published in 1927 when capacitors were high-tech. With many pictures of workers in the mica mines in India and the ladies back home who manufactured all those capacitors that kept the empire running.

I found a cool resource on a composer for The Weather Channel: twcclassics.com/information/tr

I first learned about him when Fire-Toolz shared some music that inspires her (fire-toolz.tumblr.com/post/183), and was reminded recently when she did a cover with some added metal elements: fire-toolz.bandcamp.com/track/

I've really come to appreciate “cheesy” muzak, as well as old/lost media in general, and I added this to my links page (reillyspitzfaden.com/wiki/link)

Someone visited the @mediaarchaeologylab yesterday who happened to have a photo on their phone of their ancestors who literally rode the Oregon Trail in covered wagons in the 19th century, and I asked to photograph the picture in front of the startup screen for Oregon Trail. Honestly looks like a great 8-bit rendering of the scene on the monochrome Apple IIc.

Simulation isn’t just about escapist fantasies like The Matrix or Baudrillard’s hyperreality—it’s a technological process shaping our daily lives.

In the workshop SIMULATION: PRODUCTION AND REPRODUCTION, we’ll be joined by Inge Hinterwaldner (@KIT_Karlsruhe), Selena Savic (@jazoza), Orit Halpern (@tudresden), filmmaker Christina Zimmermann for interdisciplinary perspectives on simulation’s role today.

Tomorrow (Thursday, 21 August) I’ll join a panel at the Tallinna Kunstihoone for the catalogue launch of the Tallinna Graafikatriennaal / Tallinn Print Trienniali in Tallin (Estonia) together with Marika Agu , Tõnis Jürgens and Brigita Reinert. Indeed, in the catalogue there are among the others two texts of mines: Trükitud versus elektrooniline (Print vs. Electrons) and Lõputu kirjastamise paradigma: ruum, aeg ja mälu (The Endless Publishing Paradigm: Space, Time, and Memory) for the very first time translated into Estonian, which is of course a huge honour!

Hey there, fellow retro-tech nerds! The @mediaarchaeologylab has posted its open call for practitioners-in-residence in the lab for the next season, which begins in September. Submit your proposal by May 15!

Please boost for reach.

mediaarchaeologylab.ghost.io/p

The theme for the 2025/2026 residency is Counter Computing: Alternative Imaginaries.

Lab director Lori Emerson describes it this way: "We are interested in any form of artistic and/or scholarly practice that engages counter-computational practices, such as glitching, hacking, tinkering, queering, subverting, (un)making and (re)imagining. Through such experimentation, we encourage you to explore how our relation to (and imagination of) technology can be remade to envision alternative pasts, presents and futures."

The lab is asking interested parties to submit a proposal for an up-to-4-week residency that includes full access to the lab and its resources, and logistical support. Residents are expected to produce a public lecture, demo, video, performance, or exhibition as part of the residency. Examples of previous technical reports can be seen at mediaarchaeologylab.com/projec

Get to it, my peeps! We'll see you in the lab starting in the fall.
