Mispeloogst! Nou ja, een eerste plukrondje. Het gaat worden: kersttaart-vulling!
(Mince pies). Mispelpuree, dadels, amandelen, rozijnen, krenten, suiker, heel veel kruiden, sinaasappel- en cirtroenrasp en sap, boter.
Het is nu allemaal door elkaar
gehusseld, moet een nacht staan,
dan morgen 3 uur in de oven en
daarna 1-3 maanden in potten
Ben zo benieuwd! Edit: likeur vergeten! Hop. Overeind!

A mild autumn has persuaded our medlar tree to re-bloom this autumn. The first of a heavy crop of medlars are just about to fall. We have only had one mild frost so far. You can see one fallen medlar on the ground in the blossom photo.

This is not a great advertisement for a fruit variety, LOL. #gardening #fruit #medlar

...the French also called it by a variety of equally delicious vulgarism such as "la partie posterierer de ce quadrupede" (the posterior part of this quadruped), "cu d'singe" (monkey's bottom) "cu d'ane" (donkey's bottom), and "cul de chien" (dog's bottom)

Fruits of Beau Vista orchards. Apart from Cider apples and perry pears we grow medlars to add to Teepee Cider cider, as is recorded in the golden age of cider making -the C17th. Good crop this year and new trees have been plan to increase the crop.

@PhoenixSerenity

I'm intrigued.

Useful website said go for the "Dutch" variety.

Going to check with my local nursery.

Also this...

saveplants.org/plant-profile/?

Stern's Medlar (Mespilus canescens) native to the US, but...

"The known range of Mespilus canescens is within the 22-acre Konecny Grove Natural Area."

...and nowhere else! Wow!!

Cool. It is possible to narrow it down. Too many refs, so I'm including the whole query...

Never heard of Medlar before, very interesting...

Medlar Fruit

Medlar updates. One petal left. The medlars are now all set. Looks like it will be a good crop. The four newly grafted medlars are all making good growth. And finally the barrel co-fermented cider with medlars from the harvest last autumn is tasting great. Now bottled for secondary fermentation.

Busy day at the cidery, bottling the French oaked cider and the medlar cofermented cider for their second in-bottle fermentation. Special releases for 2026. Tasting petty good now.

An English Florilegium is an outstandingly example of botanical illustration - an art form in which the English have excelled for ages. The exquisite paintings reproduced in this large book demonstrate, that the traditional skills, exceptional artistry combine perfectly with scientific accuracy. Paintings by Mary Grierson based on plants described by the Trandescants. And a great introduction on the Tradescants and their legacy. Check out the medlar.

The medlar/quince root stock whip grafts have taken. The medlar buds are swelling. 😊

Amazing appearance as the medlar blossom unfurls. Just beautiful.

Grafting time. My friend supplied me with some quince rootstock C and BA29 for grafting medlar onto. Need to increase my medlar supply for the cider blend. Grafts look promising only a week after whip grafting.

Bletted medlar pulp to be added to the cider. Organic grown at Beau Vista orchards. Medlar or Mespilus germanica, is a small pome fruit bearing tree in the large rose family Rosaceae to which apples pears quince hawthorn also belong.

I cannot find evidence that early cider makers added medlars to cider it’s likely that they did. In the C17th but a lot of additives were used. Esp beetroot for colour. And pear in the cider for sweetness. I used 5% medlar juice in this cider in 2023. Tastes delicious. Like a mild quince flavour with some tropical fruits. This is years medlar crop. Just falling now about 6 weeks after the Apple harvest. And perhaps that is the reason it’s use is not recorded.

#Mespilus germanica, #medlar awaiting bletting en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bletting
Once they have bletted (have blet?) the inside is mushy like apple sauce, and you can squeeze it out and eat it out of hand or use it for various kinds of preserve.

A metal tray mostly covered in round brown fruit that are smooth at the stem end but at the flower end have a curious sort of indentation with five persistent sepals curled over it.Closeup of the fruit from the side. You can see where some of them are beginning to blet (the dark spots).A branch with a cluster fo the fruit still on it, on a black cloth. They persist on the tree until well after the leaves are gone, into December or later.Closer view of the branch from a different angle.

I picked up some medlar at the Bellingham Farmers Market, but they need to go through the bletting process (aka, go rotten) for a few weeks before the fruit's interior is ready to eat and/or use in jams or fruit butter.

Medlar, aka "open-arse fruit," were popular for centuries and featured in Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" and Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," but they fell out of fashion and mostly forgotten about by the 1950s.

A square bowl containing medlar, aka "arse fruit," due to their unappetizing shape.
