I’ve been remembering a friend tonight, someone not gone but changed, someone else, someone more true to who they really are and always were, someone stronger, and—I hope—happier.

This friend created a wealth of wonderful electronic and experimental music, some of it dedicated to me, and occasionally some of it made just for me alone. A pearl of great price, this work stretches back 20 years, a lifespan in miniature. I’ve begun listening to it all again.

There is so much wrapped—and rapt—in these soundscapes. So many memories, like electric jolts that throw me back decades to places of unadulterated joy in the act of music-making, and yet bringing with them also the onrush of age’s flood, a deluge that wipes away any notion of ongoing contact.

I haven’t seen this friend for years now, and I feel so guilty about that. I miss them. Life grinds onwards and huge tracts of the topography of our lives are lost beyond another horizon, the rain in the distance, clouds always near at hand to obscure the view ahead.

Forgive this outpouring, but it reminds me, should I need reminding, that music is often the root of the dearest friendships. It certainly has been for me, and is one of the few languages of connection in which I find comfort.

Revisit the music within; revisit the friends out there.
