A square image with a magical, spooky, and traditional Halloween vibe, featuring vibrant purple and orange colors. The foreground shows a table draped in cobwebs, with a witch's broom lying across it, and a carved jack-o'-lantern in the lower left. The center of the table holds a black cauldron, surrounded by various props like a large toad figure, candles, pumpkins, skull, and potion bottles, creating a witchcraft scene. The background is a glowing purple, with the dark silhouette of a bare tree. The MockingOwl Roost logo is positioned above the cauldron.

Threads of Memory, Threads of Grace

Where nothing is done, yet nothing is undone.

Pause. Everything has been on pause, a hiatus to focus on more pressing matters at the present moment. I’m tired and rundown, but at the same time, I’m filled with energy to move forward, propelled by an unknown force to continue even in the most stressful moments.

If someone had told me what this year would bring, I wouldn’t have envisioned this would be how I’d handle things. It’s been a wild ride watching each moment unfold in my exhaustion. My patience may wane, yet there is a compassion behind the cloud of frustration, for this is life – a deeply mysterious path, filled with suffering and craving.

I watch the veil of memory become clouded, in disarray, fleeting moments of fantasical, entangled thought dispelled by the light of the past as I guide awareness back to now through memory. I watch the partner’s frustration, fear, and anger arise, unable to cope with the reality of the moment.

My memories are also not precise. They often cloud the moment with judgment, diluting the magic of newness and casting shadows on my experiences, shaped by nostalgia, regret, or longing.

Yet love is unconditional and boundless, swaddling the loss, the hurt, the fear, and the pain, allowing a glimpse of the truth. The bigger picture, the heart of the matter, this entire journey, this life we live in, material trappings fettered away. In our most challenging moments, we discover our strength, understand hope, fully appreciate unconditional love, and know that this journey is rife with meaning.

There are moments when there is no longer separation between the doer and the deed, the actor and the act; it is all one. It is a miraculous dance of souls asleep to the true nature of being bound by karma, awakening slowly one by one, understanding the true nature of being in the meaning behind each moment. Moksha.

“Nothing is done, yet nothing remains undone.”

~Lao Tzu

I let go of the fleeting wisps of memory and touch the sacred, now unfurling with raw emotion, learning not to push away but to feel deeply the nuance, the realness, and the beauty of this life.

Harvard’s research suggests lithium deficiency may drive Alzheimer’s—and that carefully restoring it (especially with lithium orotate) could one day help prevent or even reverse dementia-related brain changes. 🧠💪

💡 The promise: Early diagnosis + potential treatment.
⏳ The catch: More research and clinical trials are needed before this becomes reality.

Honoring a beloved mentor with Alzheimer's

When Clay Morton was a student at the University of Arkansas, he was greatly inspired by his geology professor, Dr. Walt Manger, who became a mentor and a guiding light as Morton pursued a career as a high school science teacher. Now, years later, after Manger was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Morton is striving to preserve as much of his former professor's brilliance as possible.

@FrazzledBrynn 2 data points: 1) This last week saw me attempt to explain why and how my D&D character is non-binary - and heard from the other side of the #ski lift chair: “I still don’t understand what non-binary is.” How to explain this concept on a ski lift when he’s sitting furthest from me? 2) Last night in #memorycare med tech corrected a resident: “ It’s ‘she’.” - referring the N’s table mate, S. I asked if we’d confirmed ‘her’ pronouns. We laughed. S can’t remember her name, how to use a fork and speaks gibberish. We can always remember to ask - when possible.

Today I begin the physical process of moving my 96 y/o mother into a #memorycare residence, with help from #family. We’ll set up her room with the furniture basics, assemble a bed frame, etc., assess how everything fits, and adjust the plan to reality. There are a few more steps over the next week+ until we bring her to her new space and support her moving in and getting settled. #dementia #alzheimers #bittersweet So many #feels. #familymatters #multigenerational #life

#lonely existence recently: Looking for work from home. My mom is in #covid lockdown at her facility - so no #memorycare visits. Then a friend texts and asks to pick up a few oranges. Tea and biscuits follow. Cheered me up! #friendship

#memorycare chronicles in #California. Every time I see my mom, I tell her the latest news. Simple stuff: “lots of meetings today” “ I planted a manzanita tree” “We went shopping.” The only thing she responds to is “It rained today.” Her response: “Good. We need the rain.” We are so scarred by drought that even #dementia won’t erase awareness of lack of water.

#memorycare chronicals. Conversations are driven by tone - not by the meaning of words. We respond to the tone of what is said and they are comforted. I told one caregiver she would be great at improv: she spends the day following the verbal lead of the residents. “I don’t like that cat.” “I get it.” we respond. Everyone’s satisfied that they are heard. Peace reigns for a few more moments. #dementia

#MemoryCare chronicles. Have trained the staff so that I pick what S eats every day. She has vision issues so chunks of food work best. I load her fork at times to keep her going. My mom chooses her own food. She retains the independence that blind school insisted on. Then dessert arrives and the staff know to drop it next to me. I chop it up so that both my mom and S can eat it more easily. Forks are (ahem) optional. Most satisfying: hot towels to clean hands at the end of the meal! #dementia
