#mennonite

I know next to nothing about #mennonite and #amish communities, so I found this interview with a former mennonite highly fascinating. This is one person’s experience, but she used to host a podcast (The Plain People’s Podcast, still available) interviewing many victims of the doctrinal endemic abuse within mennonite communities.

artist Kristyn Rohrer has a solo show coming up at , opening reception July 12.

"Conscientious Objectification" questions: What does it mean to be a conscientious objector in contemporary American society? Drawing inspiration from Pennsylvania Dutch and personal history, Rohrer tells the story of reclaiming and redefining their relationship to culture and utilizing ceramic as a tool for social commentary.

@chris “Once annexed by Canada, the slightly-distressed 50 states will be combined into one large province, to be re-named “South Manitoba”. Plans will then commence to distribute Maple Leaf flags and Swiss Chalet restaurants from the 49th parallel all the way down to the region formerly known as Texas.”

I was born in the real Southern #Manitoba. I think the @TheBeaverton missed that “South Manitobans” would be forced to learn Plautdietsch. #Mennonite

Sharing the audio of a message I shared at Joy Mennonite Church this morning on the theme of surviving hopelessness during our current rotten time in history.

The scripture for the message was from Matthew 5:3, which could be translated as "Happy are the hopeless, for they will receive the Kingdom" or "Blessed are the Poor in Spirit, for they will receive the Kingdom," but most of the message focused on practical techniques for coping during our bleak times.

I created a website called themennonitemap.org where I'm displaying all Mennonite villages that have ever existed. When you click on a settlement it changes the map date to the founding date of the village.

I have a 1980 edition of the #Canadian #Mennonite #Cookbook (I think someone found it at a thrift store, my Mom’s copy went somewhere else). It is #METRIC! I’ve included the recipe for #Paska (the original owner helpfully wrote in EASTERBREAD for you non-mennos).

Cover of the Canadian Mennonite Cookbook, with the word “Metric” circled.Copyright page of the Canadian Mennonite Cookbook, highlighted “printed and bound in Canada”Preface page of the Canadian Mennonite Cookbook, highlighted “This edition includes conversion of recipes to the metric system of measurements.”Two recipes, one for Zwieback and the other for Paska (EASTERBREAD)

@SnowshadowII
It's been a long time since I've been in Ontario.

The #tx & #nm outbreaks were tied to unvaccinated #Mennonite communities...

There are many such groups in Ontario. I wonder if that's a big factor in this outbreak too.

I’ve become obsessed with playing the #Mennonite game (thanks @danamcfarland ). Devon #Toews and I are cousins! In 11 different ways. Well, 4th cousins, twice removed. #Hockey :akko_shrug: Update. I had the wrong Devon Toews. Actually 5th cousins, 4 different ways.

This 500th anniversary of the founding of the #Anabaptist movement (from which the Mennonites, Brethern, Amish, and realted traditions sprung forth --- and that were theological cousins of the early Baptists) is all the more important to me this year, because of what happened yesterday in this nation. I'm grateful that the Anabaptist tradition is very clear that we do not kiss the ring, we do not bow the knee to the empire, ever.

This is one of the reasons I treasure my connections to this tradition.

One detail of my religious journey that many do not know, is that I chose to become Jewish through the Humanistic movement primarily because it was (and as far as I know still is), the only Jewish movement that is open to biereligous converts (those who are seeking to become Jewish, while still maintaining connections to another tradition). I had fallen in love with #Judaism (thankfully a passion that still is with me 10 years later), but I also loved the Mennonites, particularly its strong belief in the moral imperative of peace (or rather the Hebrew concept of Shalom which is far more than the cessation of hostility but also has the connotations of harmony, equity, and wholeness), a belief that #nationalism is just another form of idolatry, and the power of simple living (even though I do a lousy job of living this out). In other words, at its best moments, the #Mennonite / Anabaptist tradition provides a critical witness against the values of the American Empire through its focus on the ethical earthly teachings of Jesus.

I am grateful that I was able to find a path to embracing Judaism that did not require me to leave my Mennonite values out.

And so I say, Happy 500th birthday to the Anabaptist movement! And thank you to #HumanisticJudaism for giving me a way to be true to my #bireligoius values.

Today marks the 500th anniversary of Anabaptism. We honor those who resisted church and state violence, rejecting corruption to embody Jesus’ radical way. They built communities of mutual care, economic sharing, and discipleship from below. May we learn from their courage today. #Anabaptism500

My mother just published her book. I’m super proud of her. If you’re interested in what a mid-century Vancouver Island marginal Mennonite woman’s life was/is like please take a look!

Followed hashtags don't migrate, and weirdly you can't find a hashtag to manually follow it if you haven't federated with enough instances yet for those hashtags to have been used.

So I'm writing a post with some of my hashtags so I can click on them and follow them.

In my latest book, a history of the Spanish American War (1898) local to Rockingham County, Virginia, I went above and beyond to include pacifist voices from Mennonite perspectives of the time.

What thanks do I get? The conservative Mennonites have panned my text because, quote, "it did not show the Mennonites in a good enough light."

Godless hypocrites, all I did was quote your own published words from 1898-99, if you dont like it, blame your own writers!

Mennonites join #ApacheStronghold on #PrayerJourney to Supreme Court

Anabaptist World
September 6, 2024

"#Mennonite congregations and individuals from the Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery are supporting Apache Stronghold’s two-month prayer journey across the United States to deliver their appeal directly to the #USSupremeCourt.

"The #SanCarlosApache and their allies argue that a land swap tucked into a defense spending bill that gave away their sacred location of Oak Flat to create a copper mine violates their religious freedom. The journey culminates Sept. 11 in #WashingtonDC.

"The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Apache Stronghold earlier this year in a 6-5 ruling. The group is represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which will petition the high court to hear the case.

"'Obliterating the birthplace of #WesternApache religion would be a tragic betrayal of our nation’s promise of #Religious Freedom for all,' said Luke Goodrich, Becket vice president and senior counsel. 'We will ask the Supreme Court to take this case, #ProtectOakFlat and ensure that #IndigenousPeoples receive the same protection for religious freedom that all other faith groups enjoy.'

"Mennonites congregations involved in supporting the journey through prayer and hospitality included First Mennonite Church of San Francisco, Pasadena Mennonite Church in California, Shalom Mennonite Fellowship in Tucson, Ariz., Albuquerque Mennonite Church in New Mexico, Joy Mennonite Church in Oklahoma City, Raleigh Mennonite Church in North Carolina and Hyattsville Mennonite in Maryland. Acts of solidarity with the Apache ranged from preparing food to offering space to sleep to arranging public gatherings of prayer.

"'I asked myself: what does it mean to Dismantle the #DoctrineOfDiscovery? I have learned that the Apache Stronghold is not just fighting for Oak Flat, but for #MotherEarth, the greatest gift we have received. They are fighting for all of us,' said Frances Loberg, a member of Salem Mennonite Church in Oregon and the Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery. She has been on the prayer journey for its full course. 'I am being healed as I have seen how Mother Earth is alive. We have seen the pain and struggles all across the country. This fight for mother earth is for all of us.'"
