#mercurial

gzipping a full diff log from a change-based versioning system (like #mercurial) could arguably be an interesting metric of project effort

for example, here i show the commit history of my recent production of Hamlet, across which project i made 371 kb of difference from start to end

↔/hgtest
♥ hg log -p | gzip -9 > hamlet-delta.gz
↔/hgtest
♥ stat -f "%z" hamlet-delta.gz
371683
↔/hgtest
♥

A new #heptapod development blog post explains the vast amounts of ground work that has been done in #heptapod over the past 12 months, bringing #mercurial
integration in #gitlab to the next level as of version 18.5: heptapod.net/18-5-retrospective

We are now on the road to Cloud Native Heptapod, please contact us if you want to help with that.

I wish the US media would describe Trump as "capricious", "unpredictable", "fickle", "temperamental", or "erratic" rather than dishonoring the messenger of the gods by calling this graceless orange boor "mercurial".

(Note to pedants: Yes, I am aware of the etymological link to astrology.)

#DonaldTrump #Mercury #Mercurial

A full-body, bronze statue of a dynamic figure stands against a neutral, tan-colored stone wall. The figure is depicted mid-stride, with one leg lifted and arms extended, appearing to be in motion. The figure wears a winged helmet and sandals, and holds a staff with two snakes coiled around it, topped with wings. The sculpture is mounted on a circular base with ornate detailing. The bronze has a dark, polished sheen, and the lighting highlights the contours of the figure's musculature.

I always clone #git repos with #mercurial. HG just works.

My FOSS laws:

1. You can ask, but not demand.
2. You can help, but not enforce.
3. You can critic, but not rant.
4. You can compare, but not disparage.
5. You can compete, but not sabotage.

That should be the guidelines for any FOSS discussion.

@petbrain OMG… using git for a project; it’s been painful.

’s documentation is SO much better than Git’s.

This shows part of why I like Mercurial over that other version control system. I had a wrong way of doing things but wished to preserve it as example code. So I made a named branch of it and closed the branch. Then I went back to the main branch.

I even restarted my work by copying over code from the abandoned branch, using patch. Some of it was usable and this was a perfectly valid way to get a hold of it.

Mercurial is made for keeping an exegetical history of your work.
