Vi racconto cosa mi è accaduto qualche Natale addietro...

Sono in giro per Capo d’Orlando, tranquilla, assorta nelle mie commissioni, quando all’improvviso alle mie spalle esplode una voce acutissima, in perfetto stile canarino in calore:
«LA BORSA! LA BORSA!»
Ora, considerate che la cinguettante me l’ha praticamente urlato nelle orecchie.
Mi giro di scatto e, nella frazione di secondo necessaria al cervello per collegarsi ai pugni, freno la mano che stava per chiudersi a martello diretto sul suo becco.
Ma vabbè. Respiriamo.
Davanti a me compare una fringuella iperattiva che, saltellando – o forse tentando di spiccare il suo primo volo – indica con insistenza la mia borsa e finalmente chiarisce:
«Ce l’abbiamo U.GU.A.LE!»
Io penso: “Esticazzi?!?”
Ma da persona civile quale sono, sfodero un sorriso diplomatico e rispondo:
«Eh già! Vuol dire che abbiamo entrambe buon gusto.»
A quel punto la fringuella abbassa il tono di un milione di decibel e pigola, tutta fiera:
«E sono pure pezzi piuttosto rari!»
Nella mia testa parte l’allarme.
Rari?
Una comunissima borsa Desigual?
Ma… ci sei o ci fai?
Ed è lì che HO CAPITO.
Accanto alla fringuellina festosa c’è lui.
Il fidanzato.
Con la classica gocciolina di sudore freddo che gli scende lungo la tempia.
Io lo guardo.
Lui mi guarda.
Io lo fulmino con lo sguardo.
Lui mi supplica con il terrore negli occhi.
Riguardo la felice uccellina e, con il massimo della falsa complicità, le dico:
«Ma tu guarda… che fortunata coincidenza!»
Saluti. Sipario.
Alla fine mi sono detta che non stava a me decidere le sorti della loro relazione.
Però, benedetta ragazza, se la prossima volta vai in giro a raccontare che ti hanno regalato una borsa di inestimabile valore… preparati: ti rideranno in faccia.
In tutto questo, comunque, lei sarà pure ingenua.
Ma lui…
lui è uno stronzo bugiardo.

I spent #Christmas morning and part of the afternoon with friends demonstrating in front of the ICE Field Office in #Phoenix.

Traffic was, as predicted, quite sparse. But I’m glad we were there, as two young women showed up trying to find their father, who’s been missing since Tuesday. He’s there, without access to his medication, without which he may slip out of remission.

We’re helping as we can. And it was a helpful reminder of why we are there.

I ought to say #MerryXmas today, but merriment is lacking here. My better half and I are both sick with what she's confirmed is "Flu A" - H3N2, I think?

Here's hoping that New Year's Eve will be better.
