@geerlingguy I think it's rather a matter of cheap options...

485mm = 19" is having enough space [15mm total] to have enough room to make something 500mm wide outside with good tolerances...

So 2x 5-7,5mm material strenght gets you the 19" inside and the 500mm outside depending on the wiggle room desired...

It's also the reason why 19"/485mm gets adopted in #metric areas because even #metrified it's loose enough and tight enough for the desired use-case.

It's just a happy coincidence that these seem to align, plus most suppliers will have 19" as a standard form factor - or do you think #IKEA is setting up their own #production plants like #metalworks? Hell no!
