I'd love to know from a #meteorologists what we saw in the sky last night.

#clouds #meteorology #nature #storms

A view of the sky where there is a clear 45º dividing line between an area lit by the setting sun, on the left, and one where the sunlight is blocked by storm clouds, on the right. To the left, the sky and clouds are an eggy yellow. To the right of the line, the sky is a deep blue green.

With so many vital systems protecting the US public being tampered with-- whether hastily and thoughtlessly or methodically uncaring-- we're challenged to understand the scope of potential harms we're now facing.

And the upshot isn't confined to the United States.

Being better informed leads to better decisions and even decisions where none might have been made at all, a decision to participate.

Join US #meteorologists and #ClimateResearchers to hear details of how we're kept safe by the weather and climate science community--- and how we can stay that way:

"From Wednesday, May 28th to Sunday, June 1st, join meteorologists and climate scientists from across the US as we share our work, and show you what makes it so vital. We will clarify the impact of the cuts on this research, and answer your questions about weather and climate research in the US. Information on how to watch is coming soon. If you are a scientist who wants to participate, please visit this speakers page to learn more."

Are there any #meteorologists on #Fedi? Any #weather outlets doing #weatherreports ?

About 100 #meteorologists around the US are saying goodbye after getting #fired. Patrece Dayto & Kevin Orpurt were among dozens of meteorologists saying farewell to viewers. TV stations affected R owned by #billionaire Byron Allen who also owns The #WeatherChannel. In a statement, Allen's TV group says weather #forecasting at local station level is being taken over by The Weather Channel. yahoo.com/news/local-tv-meteor #weather #climatecrisis #environment #disasters #wildfires #censorship #maga

Can any real #meteorologists explain why the loop on the national weather service website is so different to what I see in radarscope? 🤔🙏

A #hurricane so small that it could not be observed by #satellite formed this weekend, surprising #meteorologists and even forecasters at the #NationalHurricaneCenter.

#HurricaneOscar developed on Saturday near #Turks and #Caicos, and to the northeast of #Cuba, in the extreme southwestern #AtlanticOcean. As of Saturday evening, hurricane-force winds extended just 5 miles (8 km) from the center of the storm.

Oscar's development shocked forecasters. There was only a modest indication from satellite imagery, as of Friday, that anything would form; and none of the major global models indicated development of any kind. It was thought that the area of low pressure would get swamped by vertical wind shear this weekend as it neared Cuba.

👀 JHC. As Hurricane #Milton approaches Florida #meteorologists are staying awake for days at a time trying to get vital, life-saving information out to the folks who will be affected. That’s their job. But this year, several of them tell Rolling Stone, they’re increasingly having to take time out to quell the nonstop flow of #misinformation during a particularly traumatic #hurricane season. And some of them are doing it while being personally threatened.

Different quadrants in a have different risks. use this as a guide to know where the worst damage is possible based on the movement of the storm.

Hurricanes have different risks based on what quadrant you experience.

Hurricane Helene drone flight breaks records for data collection and flying time

As Helene developed in the Gulf of Mexico, researchers gathered critical data from the sea and sky to better understand tropical and support the National Hurricane Center forecasters. This real time data gives a clearer picture of the storm environment and structure, reducing forecast uncertainty.

@lmc Interesting to see the amount of time given to reporting traffic and weather in the San Francisco and Los Angeles news you tuned in to. (SF, 5 mins traffic, 5 mins weather; LA, 10 mins traffic, 20 mins weather).

We’d be even more interested in hearing whether any of the #meteorologists or other #wx reporters commented on impact of traffic/transportation on #weather. As we noted in bikemonterey.org/climate-chang:

In California, the California Air Resources Board reported (“California Greenhouse Gas Emissions for 2000 to 2020: Trends of Emissions and Other Indicators, October 26, 2022) “The #transportation sector remains the largest source of GHG emissions in the State. Direct emissions…account for 37 percent of statewide emissions in 2020….When upstream emissions from oil extraction, petroleum refining, and oil pipelines in California are included, transportation is responsible for about 47 percent of statewide emissions in 2020.”
