Life will find a way.
Often, the way involves working with others, but when conditions get hard, it's every microbe for themselves. It won't do to rely on a potentially less reliant ally.

Whoa iqtree is finally up to version 3. It's setup in a separate github repo so if you rely on automated setup scripts (like I do) you'll have to make minor changes.

Time to run some tests to see if recent results remain consistent.

When you start working on bacterial immune systems and end up with RNA polymerase, sigma factors and quorum sensing:

The first part of the story is now online on BioRxiv!
biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

The regulation of the Type V-A CRISPR-Cas system in Francisella is modulated by a novel regulatory protein called MtvS. Intriguingly, MtvS-dependent regulation is mediated through quorum sensing despite the lack of canonical quorum sensing genes in Francisella.

ONT is finally fully discontinuing the original MinION Mk1B model (the original silver stick we're all familiar with). End of en era. I hope at least some future flow cells will continue to be compatible with the older platform 😔

Pseudouridine Stabilizes tRNA

Noteworthy — The modified nucleoside pseudouridine has many reasons to be considered a star among post-transcriptional RNA modifications. It was the first to be identified, in 1960. Incorporating it into mRNA vaccines was a big reason for their success. And it also shows up in numerous antibiotics. Now there's more.

"These mutation patterns are a kind of historical record in the genome, and they point to early-life exposure to colibactin as a driving force behind early-onset disease," said Dr Ludmil Alexandrov, a professor at University of California San Diego, among other appointments.

Wishing y’all a wonderful and of course .

May the force, and the poultry, be with you.

In a brightly lit biosecurity level 2 (BSL2) microbiology laboratory, I stand out against the backdrop of white countertops, shelves lined with lab equipment, and pops of colour from red trays and a vivid yellow clinical waste bin.

I am dressed in a dramatic, floor-length Jedi robe of deep brown, its wide sleeves draping over my arms. Facing the camera and completing the ensemble, I wear a comically oversized rooster mask, its orange beak and red comb boldly jutting out, feathers painted in lively hues.

In my hands, I grip a glowing blue lightsaber, holding it confidently at an angle in front of my body as if defending from errant StormTrooper fire.

The playful fusion of Star Wars Day and International Respect For Chickens Day is unmistakable-your costume humorously bridges science fiction and animal advocacy, bringing a sense of fun and celebration into the serious, orderly environment of the laboratory.

The scene is both whimsical and memorable, with my creative outfit injecting joy and personality into the sterile lab setting. In a brightly lit biosecurity level 2 (BSL2) microbiology laboratory, I stand out against the backdrop of white countertops, shelves lined with lab equipment, and pops of colour from red trays and a vivid yellow clinical waste bin.
