Have you ever heard of Mictlantecuhtli ?

" Mictlantecuhtli, in Aztec mythology, is a god of the dead and the king of Mictlan (Chicunauhmictlan), the lowest and northernmost section of the underworld Mictlantecuhtli was depicted as a blood-spattered skeleton or a person wearing a toothy skull."

In this watercolor, Mictlantecuhtli is depicted from the front, framed by stained glass, two stones set with blue eyes, decorated with blue and violet feathers. A snake dividing into two heads emerges from the skull's mouth, and an anatomical heart is depicted at the bottom of the painting. The pieces of flesh usually represented on Mictlantecuhtli's skull here take on the appearance of cempazuchil flowers. The figure wears skeletal hands on his ears, and his eyes, nose and mouth are filled with stars.

Although his head was typically a skull, his eye sockets did contain eyeballs. His headdress was shown decorated with owl feathers and paper banners and he wore a necklace of human eyeballs, while his earspools were made from human bones.

Los nueve niveles del Mictlán

El más importante viaje
inicia junto a tu Xoloitzcuintle
hijo del hueso de la vida
en la tierra de Xipe Totec.
Con cinco años por delante,
un largo y descarnado camino,
hacia el Mictlán:
tu último destino.
