Reading the story about the a*holes that cut down the Hadrian's Wall sycamore tree, I came across a new (to me) use of the term MINERALS for chutzpah or courage. A quick check of Urban Dictoniary confirmed this usage, as well as some others which I had not predicted. 😁 #Minerals #Mineralogy #MineralsJimButNotAsWeKnowThem

Screenshot of text from the BBC news website:

(... Summary Live Reporting Reporting by Duncan Leatherdale and Evie Lake and edited by Rachel Kerr

Two men accused of illegally chopping down the famous tree at Sycamore Gap in Northumberland are on trial - we're reporting live from court.

The tree, which was owned by the National Trust, was discovered lying across Hadrian's Wall in September 2023

Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 32, both from Cumbria, are charged with ey causing Β£622,191 worth of criminal damage to the tree.

They are also accused of causing Β£1,144 of damage to the wall, a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Both men would be blaming each other or other people, Mr Wright says. He said despite initially talking about their "operation” and saying other people did not have the "minerals" to do what they had done, the pair now were "lacking in courage" to admit their actions.

"Their once close friendship appears to have unravelled, perhaps as the public revulsion at their behaviour became clear to them,” Mr Wright told jurors."

Here's a large pale green apatite grain in a massive, slightly smoky quartz vein from the Moine metamorphic rocks near Bunessan in Mull. This crystal is a pretty eroded and fractured, but definite potential in this stuff... 🀞 😊 πŸ€“ #Mineralogy #Geology #Mull #Phosphate

An ovali-ish pale green mineral grain sits in wet translucent grey-brown quartz. At the bottom right three fingertips can be seen, giving a sense of scale.

This new book arrived in the post yesterday - an amazingly comprehensive update to the 2008 version. Stupendous achievement by mineralogical pals Andy Tindle and Dave Green. 381 pages of information, data & beautiful photographs galore πŸ₯° 🀩 πŸ€“ πŸ‘ A tribute to the amazing work being done by the wide community of mineralogists: academic, museum-based, "amateur", dealers and collectors. Superb.

Spud looks as though he doesn't want me to take the book away from him. #DogOnSofaGeology #Mineralogy

A black and white collie lies on a pale sofa, with a book "AG Tindle and DI Green Minerals of Britain and Ireland 2009-2024" beside him. The book has a photo of some beautiful blue crystals on the cover. The dog looks slightly belligerent, as though he is being pssessive of the book.

Since silicon is a common element in the crust, for the #printersolstice2425 prompt silicon I’m making a portrait of trailblazing geologist Florence Bascom (1862-1945), complete with geological cross sections and thin sections from her publications.

4 carved lino blocks on top of cutting mats. The largest is a portrait of geologist Florence Bascom as a young woman from neck up, looking at the viewer with her curly hair pulled back wearing a blouse with large lace collar on green vinyl. Behind her are two geological cross-sections with layers carved with different patterns to indicate different rock materials. Below on either side are two circular diagrams: these are thin sections with the patterns of the darkest ares carved. The three other Lino blocks are circular with patterns carved to print the other mineral colours in the thin sections.

#Geology / #mineralogy question: Could this be a #fulgurite?

Orange sand an pebbles stuck to one side of a piece of black rock. It looks like this would be the outside of a partially hollow rock. The piece measures about 10 cm across.Inside view of the same rock fragment. Surface is smooth and looks like it had been somewhat viscose in the past. Some veins are visible.

Aetites (Mineralogy πŸ’Ž)

In the magical tradition of Europe and the Near East, the aetites or aetite is a stone used to promote childbirth. It is also called an eagle-stone, aquiline, or aquilaeus. The stone is said to prevent spontaneous abortion and premature delivery, while shortening labor and birth for a full-term birth. From Theophrastus onwards, the belief i...

Beautiful cathode-luminescence images showing trace-element zoning and changes in fluid composition during growth of jadeite.

From: Sorena Sorensen, George E Harlow, Douglas Rumble III (2006) The origin of jadeitite-forming subduction-zone fluids: CL-guided SIMS oxygen-isotope and trace-element evidence. American Mineralogist 91: (7) 979-996

Cathode-luminescence images of the mineral jadeite. Colour changes indicate changes in trace-element or defect concentrations. The jadeite crystals first grew with red- or blue- colours, then are rimmed with green CL with increases in Ca, Mg, and Cr. All images have a FOV of 1.6 mm.

Sorena Sorensen passed away this month.

Sorena was a long-time curator at the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution. She was also an insightful and talented researcher who studied the role of fluids in metamorphism of subduction-related rocks. She also contributed to understanding the formation of jadeite and jade deposits.
