This 8 inch mini-laptop has an Intel N150 processor and 12GB RAM

A handful of Chinese PC makers have been selling mini-laptops with 8 inch displays and Intel Alder Lake-N processors for a few years. Now we’re starting to see new models with Intel Twin Lake chips.

One of the first to arrive is the X-Plus Piccolo 2-in-1 mini-laptop with an Intel N150 processor, which sells for $385, but I expect we’ll see nearly identical models from other brands soon.

Lilbits: Turning a smartphone into a mini-laptop, the first 750 Hz monitor is coming, and MCON mobile game controller hits Kickstarter

Before smartphones were a thing, the world of pocket-sized computers were somewhat divided between touchscreen devices like the Palm Pilot and mini-laptops like the HP Jornada 720. Taking inspiration from the latter, TypingCat has designed a portable keyboard case for a Google Pixel 6 Pro that turns a smartphone into a mini-laptop, complete with a Linux-based desktop environment (running inside of Android, so you can still use the phone as… a phone).

In other recent tech news from around the web, UGREEN plans to expand the line of network attached storage (NAS) devices the company first unveiled a year ago. A company called KOORUI plans to show the first consumer monitor with a 750 Hz refresh rate at CES next week. And there’s a new crowdfunding campaign for a mobile game controller with an unusual design.

This work-in-progress project is a design for a 3D-printed chassis turns a Google Pixel 6 Pro smartphone into a mini-laptop complete with a mini keyboard (and a desktop Linux UI running on Android). The kickstand is a particularly clever touch to keep the whole thing from tipping over.

Activate the Possibility of AI NAS [UGREEN]

UGREEN plans to expand its NASync line of network attached storage devices with the new iDX series featuring Intel Core Ultra chips and AI features including AI chat, smart tags, search, and meeting summarization.

KOORUI to Unveil the World’s First Monitor with a 750Hz Refresh Rate at CES 2025 [press release]

This 24.5 inch display has a FHD TN display panel, a 0.5ms response time, 95% DCI-P3 color gamut, and HDR 400 support. It’s also the first “consumer-grade monitor” with a 750 Hz refresh rate.

MCON: The Switchblade of Mobile Controllers [Kickstarter]

This game controller for smartphones has a slide-out design that makes it feel like a somewhat chunky smartphone case when retracted, while giving you a full set of controls positioned below the screen when extended. It’s going for $99 during crowdfunding, which is 33% off the expected retail price of $149. It’s expected to start shipping in August.

GPD Win Max 2 (2025) is a mini gaming laptop with Ryzen AI 9 HX 370

This week handheld PC maker GPD launched an updated version of its GPD Win 4 handheld gaming PC with a 6 inch display and an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 “Strix Point” processor, which should bring a significant performance boost over the Ryzen 7 8840U “Hawk Point” chip in the previous-generation model.

Now the company is giving the same treatment to GPD Win Max 2. This is a mini laptop with a 10,1 inch, 2560 x 1600 pixel capacitive touchscreen display and a QWERTY keyboard large enough for touch-typing. But it’s also designed to be used as a handheld gaming PC, with a pair of integrated game controllers positioned above the keyboard, allowing you to hold the computer in two hands while playing games. The GPD Win Max 2 (2025) is now available for purchase from Indiegogo, and it should begin shipping to backers this month.

So far there’s only one configuration available, and it’s an expensive model with top-tier specs. GPD is charging $1462 for a GPD Win Max 2 with a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor, 64GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage. It’s possible that lower-cost configurations with less memory or storage could show up in the future.

If you don’t care to wait for a cheaper Strix Point model, GPD is still selling a Hawk Point model with a Ryzen 7 8840U processor, 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage for $958.

Aside from the processor, memory, and storage, the two systems are pretty much identical. There are a few small changes though: both USB Type-C ports are USB4 ports now, and the cooling module and fan have been redesigned.

While Indiegogo is a crowdfunding site, the GPD Win Max 2 is a device that’s actually been around for a few years at this point, so there’s little risk that GPD will fail to deliver a product if you place an order.

That said, there’s still some risk involved with buying any devices from GPD or other Chinese handheld PC makers like AYANEO and One Netbook: these companies have made some of the most interesting little computers I’ve seen in the past few years, but they also have less than stellar track records for offering customer service and support.

OneGx 2 is a handheld gaming PC that’s also a mini-laptop with swappable keyboard layouts

Most of the handheld gaming PCs that have launched in the past few years have looked vaguely like a Nintendo Switch or Valve Steam Deck: there’s a display squeezed between a pair of game controllers and no physical keyboard.

But there are a handful of portable gaming PCs that do have keyboards for easier text input. The GPD Win 4 and AYANEO Slide, for example, have thumb keyboards that slide out from behind the screen. And the GPD Win Mini and Win Max look like little laptops with clamshell-style keyboards. One of the first entries in this space was the One Netbook OneGx mini-laptop that launched in 2020. Now One Netbook is preparing to launch a new model called the OneGx 2 that brings a few big changes to this little laptop.

The company hasn’t revealed official specs, pricing, or a release date yet. But in a teaser video posted to Chinese social video side Bilibili, One Netbook lays out some of the key features of the upcoming handheld gaming PC/mini laptop and promises that it’ll launch a beta testing program soon.

Like most modern handheld gaming PCs, the OneGx 2 features dual analog sticks with RGB backlights, action buttons, and linear triggers. But on this model, those controllers are positioned above a keyboard area.

Possibly the most intriguing thing about this keyboard is that there appears to be support for two different keyboard layouts. One is a split keyboard that allows you to type with your thumbs while holding the OneGx 2 in two hands. But you can also drop a more traditional keyboard attachment over the top of that split keyboard to give the little computer keys that are positioned more comfortably for ten-finger touch-typing.

It’s a little unclear how these two keyboards function from the promo video: I think it’s possible that the split keyboard is a capacitive touch keyboard while the full(er) sized keyboard has physical keys. But I could be wrong about that. Both keyboards are backlit.

Other confirmed features CNC aluminum body and a set of ports that includes USB4 Type-C, USB Type-A, and OCuLink.

There’s no word on the screen size or resolution, processor, memory, storage, or other features. But more details should be revealed closer to launch.

GPD Pocket 4 is an 8.8 inch mini-laptop with up to AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (crowdfunding)

The GPD Pocket 4 is a mini-laptop with an 8.8 inch, 2560 x 1600 pixel, 144 Hz display, support for up to an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 “Strix Point” processor, and a convertible design that lets you twist the screen 180 degrees and fold it down over the keyboard for use in tablet mode.

While most of GPD’s other devices released in recent yars are designed first and foremost for gaming, the GPD Pocket 4 is a more of a productivity machine that can also be used for gaming. It has a QWERTY keyboard that should be large enough for touch typing, plenty of ports including USB4 and 2.5 GbE LAN, and a modular section that lets you add a port or 4G LTE module. First introduced earlier this year, the GPD Pocket 4 is now available for pre-order for $829 and up through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. It’s expected to begin shipping to backers in January, 2025.

Keep in mind that the starting price is for a model with a previous-gen AMD Ryzen 7 8840U “Hawk Point” processors featuring a Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 graphics, and a 16 TOPS NPU.

Higher-priced configurations with Ryzen AI 9 HX 365 or Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 “Strix Point” chips have Zen 5 CPUs, RDNA 3.5 graphics, and NPUs with up to 50 TOPS of AI performance.

Here are the crowdfunding and retail prices for each:

IGG priceRetail priceRyzen AI 9 HX 370 with 64GB + 2TB$1335$1466Ryzen AI 9 HX 365 with 32GB + 2TB$1057$1157Ryzen 7 8840U with 16GB + 1TB$829$895

For the most part, the GPD Pocket 4 seems like a natural evolution of the 3-year-old GPD Pocket 3. The new model has a design that’s very similar, but it features a bigger screen with a faster refresh rate, a significantly faster processor (and a switch from Intel to AMD), and speedier memory.

In order to make room for the larger display the GPD Pocket 4 has a slightly larger body, but if you believe the promotional pictures it may also have slimmer bezels around the screen.

Another change? Like the GPD Pocket 3, the new Pocket 4 has a modular port section that lets you choose whether you want an extra USB Type-A port, an RS-232 port, or a KVM module.

What’s new for this the Pocket 4 is that GPD plans to offer a few new modules, including a 4G LTE module that will sell for $110 during crowdfunding or $125 at retail. The company never released an official 4G module for the Pocket 3 (although there is an unofficial one).

The RS-232 module will sell for $14 during crowdfunding and $20 at retail, while the KVM module will sell for $48 during the Indiegogo campaign and $55 after it ends.

Perhaps the biggest change is that instead of a 2021-era Intel processor, the GPD Pocket 4 is powered by recent AMD processors with higher-performance CPU and GPU hardware as well as dedicated NPUs for hardware-accelerated AI capabilities.

The entry-level model features an AMD Ryzen 7 8840U processor with Zen 4 CPU cores, 24MB of cache, and RDNA 3 graphics, while higher-priced models feature AMD Ryzen AI 300 series processor options that combine Zen 5 and Zen 5C CPU cores with RDNA 3.5 graphics and up to 36MB of cache.

Some things that haven’t changed? The mini-laptop is so small that there’s not much room for a traditional touchpad. But instead of the optical touch sensor used in the GPD Pocket 2, the Pocket 3 and 4 do have a touchpad.

It’s just a small one that’s positioned above the right side of the keyboard, with left and right click buttons on the left. This makes it a touchpad that you can use while holding the computer in two hands… but I suspect that it’ll be easier to use an external mouse if you plan on using the little PC on a desk or table.
