Hi there, Fediverse! I'm trying to delve a bit deeper into the role of mirror neurons in empathy and I was wondering if someone has any recent references/insights. From my study days, I know of Frans de Waal's perception-action model and also of Gregory Hickok's criticism, but was wondering if there's anything more recent or some source that discusses the two together. Thanks in advance!

What you are determines how you see other people.

Empathy is not magic. It is not telepathy, but runs on your own #MirrorNeurons, which allow your brain to instantly ”simulate” a low-key version of being in the other’s position.

The trick is, your brain can’t simulate what it can’t experience, hence your prejudices and life experience are part & parcel of what you determine are the intents of other people.

Those with the most potential for evil instinctively see the same potential in others

Bought a used wooden mallet, and now my brain really wants my arms to make Thor motions, since apparently my #MirrorNeurons have been firing a bunch while I was watching #Marvel movies.

As much as I would love for the general public to become #science literate, and as much as I applaud anything that creates interest in scientific topics, that can backfire, as the example of #mirrorneurons shows

When we see people who are suffering, our #brains feel their pain because as Christian Keysers said, #mirrorneurons are the key to our ability to understand other people.” However, sometimes we feel too much, and our #empathic abilities can overwhelm us. Empathy requires delicacy. Too much empathy can lead to emotional exhaustion, while too little can result in a lack of understanding and feeling for others. psychologytoday.com/us/blog/em
