Tiny Keyboards Layout

I was a huge fan of #Miryoku. It feels so ergonomic and logical that I “mastered” it in a matter of minutes.

But Miryoku has a fatal flaw. Using Modifier + Letter/Number + Nav button is impossible without very custom mappings.

I am trialling a slightly modified RSTA layout on a 3w6 #ergokeyboard starting. It does everything but feels less ergonomic.

github.com/rstacruz/my_qmk_key

Pros:

  • No home-row mods;
    • fewer misfires.
  • So far every combination is reachable.

Cons:

  • No Home Row Mods;
    • once you master Home Row Mods and learn to respect the delay, they become like pure magic, and you wonder how you could have lived without them.
  • Position of Ctrl, Enter and Backspace makes it a pinky heavy layout
    • this I will have to tweak as an appeal of smaller ergonomic keyboards is focus on thumbs, rather than on the pinky.

The ergo-journey continues.

I really appreciate systematic asymmetry of layout. It makes typing on small split much easier.

@ploum @vjousse @insolit
Aucun standard, clairement.

Recently removed 10 switches from each side of my Lily58 pro split #ergo #keyboard to mimic the keyboard layout of my next go to keyboard named #totem by GEIGEIGEIST.

While doing so I also programmed the firmware to use my own variant of the #qmk #miryoku layout.

I can herby confirm that using 38 keys is a totally valid option and might even help being faster and more productive.

@oneeyedman

Finally finished my #klor build and also a keymap using home row mods (based on #miryoku layout)

Here a mechanical split keyboard called klor is shown. It has a black frame, black, yellow, organge and red keys.

Great progress on 10u now that batteries arrives. This time, even with pogo pins...

Hardware assembly almost done. Just got some software issues now - like always I try to get on and did build the uf2 file already, copied over. Now a few keys seem to work but emitting very unexpected (not my miryoku colemak mod dh) keys... Do we need a special miryoku build?

I won a split #MechanicalKeyboard, a #Lily58 Pro. I'm only using a 5×3 subset of each 6×4 half to see if I can. Adapted from the #Miryoku layout: hold down a thumb (and needed home-row mod keys) on one side, type a key on the other. Green Symbols, red Numbers (and Pairs), blue Cursors, yellow Function (plus Media¹ and more symbols), with a White base.

Colored diamonds on Menu key are layer locks². Dash of Green: Column TGB is EmDash, FigureDash, EnDash. Volume key is actually a knob. Green thumb numbers are superscripts.³ I've tried to make key placement logical to help memory. Lots of unassigned slots (rounded corners).

I have a vertical version of the layout as wallpaper on my portrait-mode monitor, and have defined Super+A as a second hotkey to Show Desktop: Pinkie+Pinkie. You would not believe the hours I've stared at it thinking of new ideas or better arrangements.

I hope to actually get the #layout on the #keyboard one day, if I learn the intricacies of the #Configurator and if #QMK flashing works for me. At the moment the former is a minor problem, the latter a bigger one.

#ScreenshotSaturday

[1] Prev|Next icons should be single triangles pointing to a line, but all #KeyboardLayoutEditor offers is doubles arrows doing so, so I'm experimenting with alternatives.

[2] Red Numbers may be the only layer it would make sense to lock, but I put them all in. No NumLock, and CapsLock has been seconded to Compose (⚘), with its toggle function set to Shift+Shift in #LinuxMint.

[3] I clearly use them, and symbols like bullet and starburst. When I used Windows, I had many simple character macros in #TSE (The Semware Editor) to enter them, like Alt+Shift+Period to produce a bullet. Kate doesn't do such, so I had to resort to learning Compose sequences (• is Compose . =). I can now fix that at the #keyboard #layout level.

Keyboard layout for a split keyboard. Each half has 5×3 keys, with four thumb keys beneath. Keyboard has five layers, with the Main layer shown as in the center of each key, and the alternative four layers shown in the corners of each keycap.

I’ve been tinkering with my keyboard firmware. I started with #miryoku and added a few layers to be able use it to play video games. I also enabled the oled screens and the leds #SplitKeyboard #corne #crkbd #qmk #ErgonomicKeyboard github.com/benoitlouy/qmk_firm

I have changed my keyboard layout to move my delete key off of the outside row of the keyboard and only have it on my thumb cluster. Interestingly it has increased my adoption of homerow mods more generally and I find that I've stopped using my outside of pinky shift key as well. Which I think is probably a good thing from an efficiency standpoint.

Keymap update! Adjusted mousekeys: now using constant speed, and acceleration keys are easier to reach. Embraced one-handed layouts for playing games, including a qwerty layout for games that don't allow remapping keys (such as #timberborn). And finally, merged in main branch from the upstream QMK repo.
