In my previous post I already said it was cold and there was a lot of snow in the Netherlands. The temperatures stayed almost constantly subzero degrees. With the fog rolling in, it made the grasses covered in rime. That was an absolute bonus for me. What do you think of it?

Finally In the Netherlands we've finally got a decent blanket with snow. I can't remember it looked this good and got this amount of snow. My photographer heart is screaming to go out and take thousands of pictures. But sadly the season holiday is over and I got to work now :(, I hope this will last through the weekend, so I can take lots and lots of pictures. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Bright light shining through fog in the garden when dark

Beautiful #MistyMonday #trailrun. I was hoping to catch a nice view from up the hill, but I did not expect such perfect conditions.

I started in thick fog, then as I ran higher and higher, the sun started to peek through the fog. Then at one point, my path was winding in and out of the fog, until at the top, I was in a completely different world. 👀

There is a capital city, #Bratislava, hidden somewhere down there, I swear! 😄 Even though nothing, not even the castle could be seen.

Ein Wegweiser, ein vorbeifahrendes Auto - kann man im Nebel erahnen. Das winterbraune Gras verschwindet, wenige Meter, von uns entfernt im dichten Nebel.

A photo taken at sunset (so not very high quality). It shows the meadow and a small hill behind our house. A layer of mist is creeping on the ground towards the photo-taker. It's thickest near the hill further in the background, where it originates from the river, and is gradually getting thinner, with some grass peeking out from it.

Misty forest. Taken some time ago when we were mushroom hunting (which is one of the few activities that gets us out of the house 😄 hence all the photos taken then).

A photo taken in a forest. The trees in this part are all deciduous, and there were still some green leaves, rather vibrant-looking in the prevalent brownish-grey palette, on some branches at the time the picture was taken. The trees in the foreground can be seen clearly, but further into the background they are less and less visible in the mist. The mist is not very thick, and it looks sort of delicate. The ground is covered in brown fallen leaves of the previous seasons, and an occasional mossy patch.

Another eerie misty photo. This one was taken early in the morning, on the way to do some mushroom hunting in the forest. Everything was milky and very quiet...

A photo taken outside, on a path on the edge of the village. The path is visible on the left of the picture. To the left of it is artificially raised ground, a flood prevention measure (further to the left is the river, not visible in the photo). To the right is a meadow and a few trees. At the bottom of the photo, the grass and other plants still have quite vibrant colours, but further on, the mist subdues them. Silhouettes of trees can be seen in the background, and the mist swallows everything else - there is no indication where the sky might begin, it is all just uniform milky white.

There's a river not too far from our house, which means we tend to get creepy mists in autumn. Here's one that I took a picture of while walking Kitty-boo. It was literally coming right for us - Boo couldn't care less, though, and just dragged me away as it was getting interesting 🙄

A photo taken close to sunset, of a meadow behind our house. On the left, a bit of a small building, which belongs to the church and whose purpose I still don't know, is visible. Next to it is a tree. The rest of the picture shows the meadow, with ruins of a former barn in the middle (now just one row of stones that used to make up a wall, mostly overgrown by nettles), and in the background some more trees and forested hills. There are some orangeish clouds in the sky, tinted thusly by the setting sun. From the tress in the background, a layer of mist can be seen creeping toward the camera, with denser vegetation peeking out from it here and there. At that point it had almost reached the barn ruins, which, just like the grass between them and the camera, were still clearly visible (or as clearly as the phone camera allowed).

"The Sisters" - Lake Kejimkujik - temperature -14° C all day.
plus a wind!

This photograph was taken on a day when the temperature was bitingly cold, with a bitter wind blowing. I had to keep my camera batteries in my underwear. It was so beautiful that I hardly noticed the cold, though and didn't stop until the light failed. The lake was frozen solid and was constantly creaking and groaning, sending eerie sounds through the wind.

A cold feeling almost monochrome scene, showing a frozen lake surface stretching towards three separate small islands across the frame with evergreen trees growing on them. The third island is at the right edge of the frame. There is a wind blowing, causing the frozen surface of the lake to be partly obscured by drifting snow. Beyond the islands are hills through the clouds of blowing snow.

When a fog or mist partly obscures and partly exposes elements in the countryside, what used to be familiar, even mundane scenes change their character to become one of mystery.
