One issue I consider to remain with low-latency mixnets and overlay networks is that downtime can be deanonymizing.
Even if one has constant bitrate with randomly-selected short downtime/network degradation simulation, that doesn't really help when one's town loses power entirely a few times in a year or whatever and someone bothers to try and map the downtimes onto known locations of power outages over the same year.
Is there any sensible model for handling this failure case?

Together with George Danezis, Ania Piotrowska serves as the designer of the Loopix mixnet. She was originally involved in research on mixnets and network traffic analysis as part of the PANORAMIX project in the Information Security Group at University College London.
Ania holds a Master's degree in Algorithm Analysis from the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology. Previously she worked at Google DeepMind, Chainalysis and Volvo IT.
NYM Technology utilizes mixnet technology, which blends and redirects user traffic through a network of specialized nodes called mixes to conceal their true addresses and connections. Claudia Diaz leads the design of the Nym network.
With 20 years in privacy tech, Claudia is a leading European researcher, chairing symposiums, publishing 60 articles, and heading COSIC at KU Leuven. She is the principal investigator for the PANORAMIX initiative, focused on next-gen mixnets.

@ad_on_is The truth is that the #internet should be considered useful as a WAN routing layer, but nothing should actually be using it directly as it is unreliable both because of malicious actors and because of gross neglect by many operators.
Support for #AsynchronousCommunication (which #Usenet demonstrated) is an essential property. #Anonymization, #P2P routing & key-addressing are also minimum requirements to hinder trivial censorship. #Mixnet operation is even better.
@jeffcliff @brewsterkahle That is an interesting option, though I'm not sure #Tor is preferable to #I2P for torrenting or other #bittorrent-adjacent protocols (even if it lacks padding, loop messages, delays, batching, etc) .
Although they're not using the default Tor network, their implementation doesn't seem like it'd quite reach the effectiveness of an actual #mixnet.
That could of course be added to their protocol in time.
