Check out this short write-up I put together, "Warmer samples for a cooler world", highlighting our recent paper.

The paper assessed the impact of different sample storage techniques on chemical (ammonium, orthophosphate, pH, conductivity, turbidity) and biological markers (SARS-CoV-2, CrAssphage) in #wastewater!

The big shock was that storage at bog-standard 4°C was a real winner:

Nominations open for the 2025 Molecular Ecology Prize

The prize will go to an outstanding scientist who has made significant contributions to Molecular Ecology. These contributions would mostly be scientific, but the door is open for other kinds of contributions that were crucial to the development of the field.

nominations DUE Friday, April 11, 2025

A request to the #eDNA #environmentalDNA community. We are working on a project related to eDNA and ethics and looking for feedback from the user community. Please help us and complete this survey. forms.office.com/r/P6R57BAbZq Please pass it along to other users.

If you are a #conservation biologist, #ecology practitioner #molecularecology etc. or have been thinking of using the tool, we would like to hear from you.

New manuscript category coming soon for Molecular Ecology and Molecular Ecology Resources, "minireviews" on e.g. new topic or research area for which there is not yet sufficient data for a full review or focused overview of a niche topic ... and more. Message me for further information

There is a free online Conservation Genetics Workshop running March 27-29 at the link below. The goal is to identify barriers to using these methods, and also to foster some collaborations among scientists. It involves some group work/discussions after each seminar. It runs for 2 hours each day.

Stand development stages from wildfire disturbance, establishment, crown closure, early self thinning, late self thinning, to mature. With more frequent wildfires, there is less time for regeneration between disturbances, leading to a truncation of stand development stages. This gives less time for sites to reach the mature stage.

Using #environmental #DNA (#eDNA) from #soil to not only detect the presence or absence of #endangered #kākāpō in #New #Zealand, but to also assess #population #genetic patterns and even identify individuals.

This could be developed into an excellent, non-invasive #conservation #monitoring and #management tool.

A kākāpō named Sirocco on Maud Island. (A green parrot.)Figure 1 from the paper. Quote: “a) Cladogram of all species and genera detected by 12S rRNA metabarcoding of Whenua Hou soil samples. b) Relative taxon abundances of sampled locations averaged across replicates (from left to right: kākāpō display sites, feeding stations, abandoned nests, and Nestor parrot aviaries). Two different sites per location were sampled (top and bottom) at three different distances, and two aviaries of the Nestor species kea and kākā. For feeding station 2 (4m), both replicates resulted in dropouts.”
