"Scallops are neither male nor female. They can be both, or they can switch: male to female, female to male, according to the seasons and their biological needs. Scallop gender is as fluid as the ocean that they live within."

Part 3: check out a shell on the move. Previously, you will have seen a still shot of a toothed top shell. Here is a video of the same sea mollusc moving over the sand. We were riveted

Ariolimax columbianus, the Pacific banana slug, is the second largest land slug in the world, and a common sight in our temperate rainforests.

A tiny little snail living under a log! I think it's in the family Oxychilidae, but I'm not sure.

A close-up of a tiny snail travelling along wood. The shell is circular and dark bronze/amber, and the body is fully emerged as the snail moves in a straight line. Its body is dark, almost black, and its eyestalks are extremely long, almost half as long as the entire body.

Here's a very cool #Science article! Octopuses change genes in strange ways.

It's explained by #Scientist and #ScienceWriter Meg Mindlin at the #Octopus web site

At first I thought this was some sort of fossil - it felt like part of the rock. Turns out it's a chiton, a marine mollusc. This one is a giant chiton, Plaxiphora albida.

Chitons use biomineralisation to coat their teeth in iron (technically magnetite) so they can chew away on coral and algae growing on rocks.

A cute predatory snail I found, Haplotrema vancouverense (the robust lancetooth snail). It's strange to think of land snails as predators, but a lot of them are! They eat other snails and slugs, among other things.

A close-up shot of a snail with a pale yellowish-tan shell, covered in tiny, faint striations perpendicular to the curl of the shell. The snail's head and body are out; it is pale, vaguely bluish-white, and its eyestalks are pointing towards the bottom of the image. It is being held in a human hand.

A small Arion slug doing acrobatics atop moss spore capsules. I don't often see slugs reaching such dizzying heights!

Vespericola columbiana, the northwest hesperian, is a cute little "hairy" snail that we have here in BC.

A very close-up photo of a tiny snail with a light brown shell covered in many tiny spiky hair-like protrusions, and a pale brown body. Its two eye stalks are peeking out from under the shell at the camera.

The Pacific Banana Slug, Ariolimax columbianus, is our largest native slug, and a relatively common sight in the forests of southwestern BC.

A large, brownish-yellow slug is curled into a circle, with its face right next to the tip of its tail and aimed towards the camera. Its mouth is flexing as it appears to chew away at something stuck to its tail.
