#FotoVorschlag: Federleicht // Light as a feather

My #chickens are a lot lighter now, as they're losing so many #feathers. They're in the middle of #moulting and especially the two older #hens look a bit scruffy (their feathers are growing back nicely though, as you can see). There's also rain and wind and as of today, they have to stay cooped up due to avian flu. Apologies for the pity party, I just wanted to ... shed some light on the daily struggles of our feathery friends. 😋

Interior of a well-used chicken coop, featuring two wooden beams used for perching. The floor is covered in litter and a thick layer of feathers, indicating that the chickens are currently moulting.A light-brown and white hen named Henna, appearing slightly scruffy due to moulting, stands in an outdoor chicken enclosure. There's a new patch of feathers growing on the wing that's facing the camera. The coop floor is covered with wood shavings, and the hen is positioned near a dark plate filled with fruit and vegetable scraps, including carrot peels and apple and pear cores. The enclosure is surrounded by wire mesh, with a grassy area visible in the background.Rear view of a white and light-brown hen in an outdoor chicken enclosure, showcasing new feather growth on its back and tail area after moulting. Henna, that's the name of the hen, stands on wood shavings, with a plastic ring visible on one feathered leg. The enclosure is surrounded by wire mesh fencing, and another hen is partially visible in the backgroundA light-coloured hen named Stella with a prominent red comb stands in an outdoor chicken enclosure. There are new feathers growing around the beak. The hen has a full, rounded body with soft, pale feathers, and its feathered legs show some blue discolouration due to a spray I use to mask pecking injuries. The enclosure floor is covered with wood shavings, and other hens are partially visible in the background. The area is surrounded by wire mesh fencing, with a grassy field visible beyond.

"at no point did u hear me say i was ready for my closeup"-- molting male Northern Cardinal

A bright red bird with a battered-looking head and lots of gray-black pinfeathers coming in on his face is sitting on a branch with some green leaves on it. There is a bit of blurred-out sky and another blurred-out green branch behind him. This is a molting male Northern Cardinal, and he does not look happy. Northshore New Orleans area. Aug 30, 2025. Blue jays and cardinals sometimes go through an annual molt like this. You can utilize this comic to think about other normal body experiences that society thinks is taboo. Talking about periods is a common example.

119: Normalize Bodies

Photo Description:
Panel 1: In the middle of winding branches zoomed in with various browns and greens is a screech owl named Nugget. She hears someone say from the left side, "I'm not coming out! I'm too embarrassed!"
There is a question mark next to Nugget.

Panel 2: There's a response from the right side, "I promise whatever your body is going through, you're not alone."
The left responds, "Alright..."

Panel 3: The panel zooms out to reveal a cardinal named Paprika on the left and a blue jay named Pepper on the right. Both birds are missing most of their head feathers.
Paprika, "Oh! You molted your head feathers too."
Pepper: "Yep! It's normal."

Panel 4: Nugget replies to them both, "It's important to normalize our bodies." There's a red heart above Paprika and a blue heart above Pepper.

The cardinals coming to our feeder are all molting. The females remain on the ground and are the color of the sparrows. The males are showing some blue color under the back of the wings - very surprised by this. All look ragged and frazzled as if they just pulled an all-nighter. #birds #molting #cardinals #NotABirder

molting stinks

Brown Thrasher

lots of noise in this image because a bird with untidy head feathers is happier in the deep shade...

A rusty brown-backed bird with creamy underparts well marked with longish spots has a noticeable dent in the hairdo along the nape and sides showing some old gray underfeathers. The black pupil contrasts strongly with the bright yellow iris, giving the birb a stunned if not stoic look. This is a molting Brown Thrasher perched on a wooden fence, barely visible at the bottom of the frame. A few vines twirl around birb's feet. The background is a blurred out trunk and lots of blurred-out green. Photo by Peachfront. Aug 26,2024.
