After a discussion with someone at bsdcan.org (My hobbies collided a bit) I was reminded of the moon landing videos

Japanese space startup Ispace lost contact with its Resilience lunar lander during a descent attempt on Thursday, June 5, marking the company's second failed moon landing in two years. Officials at Ispace’s Tokyo headquarters confirmed they had not re-established communication with the spacecraft after it attempted to land on the moon’s Mare Frigoris region, near the lunar north pole.

2 more years.
Yesterday #ispace 's #moonlanding of #resilience and #hakuto failed. One goal was to take a sample of moondust and to sell it to #NASA, but only for self-collection. For 5k $, they say. This meant the first private #mining contract in #space. The plan: produce accomplished facts, a binding precedent.
Now we have 2 more years to find new rules for space and to convince every player that we need those rules for the sake of a peaceful future and the security of our species.

Japanese Private Lunar Lander Resilience Fails Mission, Crashes on Moon

It was early morning in Tokyo when the Hakuto-R Resilience lander of the Japanese company ispace inc. attempted the Moon landing. For the people who watched the conclusion of the first Hakuto-R lander's mission, the end of Resilience's mission unfortunately offered a sense of deja vu. This time, the telemetry transmission was interrupted less than two minutes before the Moon landing.

Well, that was anti-climactic. The stream wrapped up. Nobody knows if the spacecraft landed or not, or what state it's in.

I'm going to assume it's smacked into the moon, and is defunct… as usual.

I sure hope they succeed - it's getting a bit tiresome seeing everyone drop things onto the moon that immediately tip over.

At this point, you'd think the designers would understand that the number one challenge of is to not fall over.

With the moon landing attempt today targetting the Mare Frigoris region, if it succeeds it will be forever known as the "Friggin Moon Base."

In further frivolous commentary, I'm hoping the project's European rover "Tenacious" is the first in a line of attempts and that they designate this one "Tenacious A." Then Jack Black fans will watch very closely what comes along next.

Space is hard, lunar landings are even harder.

Only 4 of 13 robotic lander missions since 2019 have been successful, as shown in the table below.

Note that the ispace Hakuto-R Mission 1 lander ended with a hard landing in April 2023.

Sending best wishes to RESILIENCE for a successful landing.

After landing, the ispace RESILIENCE lander will have about 14 earth days (one lunar day) to complete its mission, before night falls, bringing darkness and brutally cold temperatures.

Similar to other recent robotic landers, RESILIENCE is powered by solar cells and will not have sufficient energy storage to survive the lunar night.

🤔 Wow, a grainy of from 2015 is supposed to be *fascinating* in 2025? 🚀 Time travel must be involved, because we're clearly stuck in the past. Maybe next they'll unveil the cutting-edge "moon landing" footage! 🌙📼
