Extreme mossiness; even the air seemed mossy thanks to humidity and light. For those of you in more southern latitudes in the Northern hemisphere, those are the shadows at noon in Seattle in December.

The sunlight is bouncing off a moss lined sidewalk next to a row of mossy trees. The branches have clumps of moss on them. The curvy surface tree roots are covered with miss. The soil is mossy as well as grassy. There is a fence behind the trees, and you can see a bit of a corner gas station with the typical Shell yellow and red colors on the side of the canopy.

Really wet mosses. It's interesting how one species gets wet, flops down and looks like algae, and the other two remain spiky and erect. There's a yellowish lichen off to the right

Three kinds of green moss on a rock wall: a white tipped moss (Gray cushioned grimmia?) at the top left, a cat tail moss (electrified cat tail?) in the middle, and another species with spiky supersaturated leaves at the bottom right. The mosses have brown tipped sporangia rising above the cushions, some of which have collected a drop of water.

Welcome to #mosstodonmonday
Whilst waiting for a plumber to turn up to fix our leaking shower, I wandered about the garden. It is very mild today, nearly 15°C in the sun, which caught this spread of moss on one of the granite edges that stick up hence the photo. There are times when I wonder how on earth, despite the dryness of the summers we get, the moss manages to grow back such a vibrant and lush green.

Picture of a sheet of bright green moss, growing across a granite block, which extends from the foreground, in focus, to a blurry background. Patches of striped shade and sunlight pattern the moss. A few low growing plants are spread out across the moss, which is also decorated with a number of randomly landed brown oak leaves, fallen from the surrounding trees.

What kind of Sphagnum moss is this? What conditions does it prefer? (Picture gallery)

That was exciting! I had the pleasure of giving the first lecture on future energy systems at the @Euref Campus in Düsseldorf. Not only were the first students of our #MoSSES master’s program there, but also several partner companies. A fantastic start. duesseldorf.euref.de/en/welcom

Bright pink crabapples. This tree was so odd: the crabapples were growing on short spurs all over the branches, so that it looked like a bright pink knobby mossy hedgehog tree. I couldn't get a good shot at it, but maybe I'll try again.

A couple of stems of bright pink crabapples grow on short spur stems off tree branches. The branches are covered with bright green moss and dusty blue green lichen patches. The pink of the crabapples contrasts sharply with the moss and lichen, making for seasonally festive natural decorations.

Researchers say #mosses could one day help turn the dust and rocks of other planets 🪐 into fertile soil. Moss spores can survive for at least nine months ⏳ stuck to the outside 🌌 of the #ISS and still reproduce once back on Earth. #Scientists have found that the desert moss species Syntrichia caninervis can withstand #Mars-like 🔴 conditions theguardian.com/science/2025/n

Another opportunity in between the rainstorms to enjoy the beauty of Redwood National and State Parks yesterday and so there were numerous fungi and mosses on display. This is a yellow/orange fungus (possibly some type of coral fungus) perhaps an inch tall and very bright given its background of fallen leaves and other forest detritus. If any viewers know more about the proper identification of this one, please do share a response - thanks!Another opportunity in between the rainstorms to enjoy the beauty of Redwood National and State Parks yesterday and so there were numerous fungi and mosses on display. This is a particularly nice green moss with leaves (?) of about a quarter inch and very bright against the still wet tree trunk. Microworld in the moss.
Among the moss, a small mushroom, fragile and translucent, rises like a natural sculpture. It reveals the beauty hidden in the corners of the forest. In this silent and hidden microworld, each shape and tone breathes with its own rhythm.

The photograph shows a small, creamy-orange mushroom growing among a thick blanket of green moss. The mushroom is thin and fragile, with a fine stem and a rounded cap with visible folds or blades on its underside. The light is soft and natural, creating a humid and tranquil atmosphere. The entire background is covered in green, blurred tones, highlighting the texture of the moss and making the mushroom appear like a tiny inhabitant of a silent, hidden world.
💚💚 I wasn’t so much charmed by the mushroom but by the various mosses in the background ——- Ik was niet zozeer gecharmeerd van de paddenstoel maar van de verschillende mossen op de achtergrond 💚💚.

These elderly Thoda women of the Western Ghats identify cryptogam species (lichens and mosses) by their local names. This is an important group of plants in Thoda culture that is often overlooked in modern projects to conserve biodiversity; traditional knowledge contributes to the discovery of new species used for medicinal purposes and food. , 2010

I'm feeling a drying up of photographic inspiration...need to look at a new direction somehow. Meanwhile, here's some nice moss from early summer perigrinations
#Photography #SeattleWashington #SeattleSummer #RainyDays #Mosses ##Mosstodon

A nice stand of green haircap moss with red-brown sporophyte capsules atop red-brown stems growing above the leafy stems. The pointy moss leaves are very wet and almost translucent due to a rainy spell, and are arranged so that the stems are full of leaves.

Moss ID maybe incorrect, I didn't key it out.

Stairstep moss (Hylocomium splendens), Deception Falls National Recreation Area, Washington
#Photography #PNW #NativePlants #NativePlantsOfThePNW #SaveOurPublicLands #DeceptionFallsWashington #Mosstodon #Mosses #MossMonday

This close up of a few branches of stairstep or splendid feather moss shows why it is called those names. Each moss branch is spread out full of small stems of feathery leaves, the overall effect looking a bit like an ostrich feather. The feathery branches cascade down the side of the tree stump they grow on, each one separate and spread out like steps. It looks like a carpet of glowing feathers.
