While a class element is possible, I think the allowance of string instruments is more likely to be a simple practical things: string instruments are quiet, and the medieval counterparts even more so than their contemporary versions.
Viols, lutes, harps simply don’t project enough sound to be heard well outside a dwelling. There’s a reason an orchestra has 30 string players and only 2 trumpets.
