The Stockholm archipelago in Sweden is lit up in a golden bath of sunlight, with a mysterious mist hanging low in front of the silhouetted island. The water shimmers like a glowing, rippling mirror. The photo was taken by PKP's Jason Nugent on his travels.

What do you do when the sun forgets to come out
in the longest darkness of winter months?
Bueno I go out into the frosted forest
all things twinkling with ice like tiny eyes with a lust for life…

Poetry Book Society postcard for Joana Adcock’s collection SPLIT, Winter 2019 Choice. Next to an abstract pattern on black cracks is the text of a poem:

What do you do when the sun forgets to come out
in the longest darkness of winter months?
Bueno I go out into the frosted forest
all things twinkling with ice like tiny eyes with a lust for life
and leaves crunching underfoot
glaciers chippit oot her glens

The project ‘Ausbildung digitalisieren – Betriebe stärken’ by @plushumanite promotes #digitalisation of in-house training and further education in #Saxony—against #SkillsShortages and for a more inclusive #VocationalTrainingSystem.

Goals: Introduction of #LunaLMS in model companies, further development through on-site customisation, documentation of successes for other companies, and improved integration of trainees with special needs for #accessibility or #multilingualism.

This funding notice displays the flag of the European Union in the upper left corner. Next to it is written: Co-funded by the European Union. Below there is the old-fashioned coat of arms of the Free State of Saxony, next to which is written: This project is co-financed from tax revenues on the basis of the budget adopted by the Saxon State Parliament.

📣 Join us for a talk by Dr Jan Kühne, visiting professor at #UT2J: “Polyglot Pen Pals: Translingual Literary Exchanges with Kafka, Pagis & Darwish” 📍 Maison de la Recherche (D30) 🗓️ Tue, Dec 2, 5:00–6:30 pm (hybrid) 🔗 link on request: dirk.weissmann@univ-tlse2.fr #literature #multilingualism

Leider nicht genug, um den Text nochmal prüfen zu lassen. #multilingualism #mehrsprachigkeit #arabisch

Gute Initiative aber.

Eine Werbung mit dem Schriftzug „you text, we care“ und einer Wolke des Wortes „Probleme?“ in verschiedenen Sprachen. In der arabischen Version fehlen die Ligaturen.

Another reason why understanding how #multilingualism and socio-economic opportunities are distributed across urban space. A lot of my research has been about exploring these aspects from a geographical perspective.

The link is in Finnish, but the title roughly says "Large-scale study: Linguistic competencies are linked to slowing down the aging of the brain."

Keeping my fingers crossed for positive funding decisions 🤞🎓🔎

I had a lovely exchange with Stephan on the topic of multilingualism on the web today. He's written about it on his website:
https://stephanmax.com/little-bit-german/#multilingualism-is-beautiful

Exchanges like these are why I really love the small web. This was the first time in ages that I've read a few longer texts in German and to my surprise, I could easily understand most of it! (I'm Dutch, so cheating a bit)

I liked reading in German so much that I'm now looking for more. Please let me know if you have recommendations for personal blogs or even your favourite books in German.

After years of thinking about multilingual programming, I finally built something concrete to explore the idea: ouverture.py

LLMs have amplified a subtle problem - code becomes more "readable" to English-trained models, less accessible to programmers who think in other languages.

So I built a proof-of-concept: content-addressed storage where functions in different languages with identical logic produce the same hash.

A French dev can write calculer_moyenne(), a Spanish dev calcular_promedio() - they hash together, stored as linguistic variants of the same logic.

It's early, messy research code with known bugs. But I'm learning in public and would love input from:

  • Non-English only speakers

  • Anyone curious about linguistic diversity in programming

  • Critics: is this solving a real problem or creating new ones?

🎉🎤 "Omnilingual ASR" claims it can recognize 1600 languages, but let's be real—who even knew there were that many? 🙄 With so many languages covered, it's only a matter of time before it becomes the world's first tool to mispronounce every language equally! 🌎🤦‍♂️

Update. New from #COAR (@coar_repositories): "This paper explores the concept of #semantic #multilingual #search: an emerging approach that retrieves information by meaning rather than by exact wording, enabling users to search in any supported language and discover relevant work across all languages…When you ask a question in your language, the entire world should have a chance to understand and respond."

For me, there was lots to take away from the reading that follows my own from Menna, which I am sure will be fascinating for #Gaelic speakers in a wider #CelticLanguages context, and anyone who loves poetry - just because of the joy of #multilingualism.

Whatever your language competence, I hope this underscores that multilingualism is your gift to explore and get #creative with.

Update. "Multilingualism in science…expands the participation and dialogue among diverse communities of scientists and influences stakeholders who use science to address urgent global issues. [But] systematic and sustained implementation of multilingual scholarly communication and peer-reviewed publishing is cumbersome for journal management platforms, research teams, and editorial boards…This Research Note…proposes the first statement of the _Journal of Disaster Studies_ (JDS) on inclusive multilingualism."

@ElenLeFoll Yes, the music was awesome!

It was also nice to hear from Eva Martha Eckkrammer that #DigitalHumanities has a well-etablished and innovative role within the #Romanistik, a strength to maintain into the future.

I agree that the voice of Romance Studies, with their experience of #multilingualism, #diversity, #contextualization and #comparison, is vital for the future development also of #DigitalHumanities methods, including but not limited to #LLMs.
