@debby #Mumble, #IRC, #XMPP (+OMEMO = @gajim / #monoclesChat) & #Linphone (#SIP / #VoIP) are the better options. #NextcloudTalk also exist and @monocles as well as @Stuxhost offer that.
#Signal and #Session are #proprietary, #centralized, #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider solutions!
And #Matrix is just a shittier #XMPP+#OMEMO. Give @delta / #DeltaChat a try instead.
OfC #JitsiMeet and #WebCall are also great!
Skype, one of the pioneers in internet telephony, has officially ended its support on May 5, 2025. While it was not perfect, Skype held a special place for many as their first experience with online calling. @waffles You're absolutely right, you always need a contingency plan. I was one of the first to adopt Discord in my circle of friends, because it was just a way too good of a deal to pass up. But I've seen the writing on the wall for a long time; unless you're a non-profit it's just not feasible to do large-scale voicechat without seeing some sort of return. It must cost a fortune to run Discords servers! Therefore I've been looking at alternatives like #XMPP, #Matrix and #Mumble for years.
@fuchsiii @puppygirlhornypost2 @kopper granted, #TechIlliterates & #Consoomers are just a bad standard to begin with and aligning with the bottom barrel is always gonna lower one's standard.
People need to realize there's not one perfect app.
The former are #IRC, #XMPP+#OMEMO, #WebCall, #OnionShare, #Linphome, #Mumble, …
The latter one are #MicrosoftTeams, #Discrord, #QQ, #WeChat, #iMessage, #Signal, #Matrix, …
@emma@shrimp.emmabyte.de @forse@kolektiva.social @xgranade@wandering.shop #TeamSpeak is proprietary, so I wouldn't consider that a viable alternative. #Revolt is free software and self-hostable, but last time I checked the setup you get by following their documentation does not include working voice. I hope they will fix this in the near future.
#Mumble has served me and my friends since before #Discord was made, and is likely to outlive it, just as it has outlived many other voice chats before it. It also comes with far superior mic and sound controls, to better filter out background noise. I've not seen any web-based voice chat service handle this well, if at all.
#discord IS LITERALLY THE PROBLEM!
It's worse than any #IRC, #Mumble or even the old #TeamSpeak & #Skype for that matter.
It combines the disadvantages of #Forum, #paywalled #documentation, #chat and #voicechat with 0 redeeming qualities (unlike #Zulip & Mumble & #XMPP+#OMEMO) it's just an #InformationBlackhole!
I'm shure fecking #dread has better moderation and I'd rather use #MicrosoftTeams + #Slack cuz those at least have proper #moderation tools.
Case in point: I'd rather #SelfHost all my comms infrastructure than to ever use something like Discord or any other #GDPR-violating SaaS that is just enshittification.
I'd rather recommend people to instead choose a tool that does everything but horrible to go with multiple smaller & good tools

https://www.chapril.org/Mumble.html
@codimp @lou_de_sel @tournesol
#Mumble est disponible dans #Yunohost.
@dragonfriend not really.
My recommendation is to #SelfHost #Mumble or go to an #IRC instead...

As #Microsoft prepares to phase out #Skype in May, it might be a good idea to try out #FOSS alternatives such as #Mumble, #Jitsi and @bigbluebutton for voice/video conferencing. Specifically for Mumble, I have my own server at mumble://gianmarco.gg open 24/7!
