Timothy the Talking Cat in a Locked Room Mystery

“There’s been a MURDER!”
“Where! Who! Why!”
“Here! I don’t know! I don’t know that either!”
“Oh no!”
“Oh yes! A despicable and yet most mysterious murder!”
“I know I said ‘where’ already but can you be more specific?”
“Behind this locked and bolted door, within the windowless room which has no means of entry OR exit!”
“But then there’s no way the murderer could get in!”
“Exactly!”
“And no way the murderer could escape!”
“Exactly! It is a locked room mystery!”
“We’d better open the door then.”
“We can’t! The KEY HAS GONE!”
“Oh no!”
“Oh yes. Not only is the door locked from the outside but the key is missing!”
“Wait…how do you know the key is missing?”
“I threw it out of the window.”
“It was you who locked the door wasn’t it?”
“Of course! That is why it is all SO mysterious. I locked the door so how did the murderer get in while I was out here all the time!”
“That is a mystery…but wait, if the door is locked and the key is missing, how do you know there was a murder?”
“Well the guy inside was dying and shouting ‘murder’ and ‘your murdering me’ and ‘I can’t breathe'”
“This is an air tight room…”
“Yes, completely. Which makes it even more mysterious!”
“You locked somebody in an airtight room and threw away the key?”
“Yes but now there has been a murder.”
“Oh, I’m pretty sure I know who the murderer is…”
“Who???”
“It was you Timothy…you murdered who ever you locked in that air tight room.”
“How was I supposed to know that people need air to breathe!”
“Well, you would know because I can see that on your iPad you still have a web page open entitled ‘How to Suffocate Your Victims By Locking Them in an Airtight Room'”
“Gasp! But I must be innocent!”
“Why?”
“There’s now way you would post a story in which everybody’s favourite purple cat commits a horrible murder!”
“Don’t worry, I’ll just end the whole thing by saying you were having a nightmare or something.”
“Not much of nightmare for me. A big nightmare for the guy in that locked room though.”
“I guess so. Who was it anyway?”
“That’s the BIG TWIST – it was YOU!”
“Nooooo!!!!!!!!! Wait, I’m fine.”
“THAT”S WHY IT IS SO MYSTERIOUS!”

The #MurderMystery is intriguing, but the investigation makes sense only if you can credit some extraordinary intuitive leaps, which in my humble opinion have always been a weakness in the series. Still, I will happily read the series to its end. goodreads.com/review/show/6648 #books

A retelling of another story - November 26, 2025 - While not a direct retelling, the third book of the Lady Sherlock series reimagines the characters of the original Sherlock Holmes series in a refreshing, entertaining way. These books are just plain fun to read.

I just released my new novel, The Quiet Hand. It’s a contemporary murder mystery and a very different beast from my fantasy novels. Writing it pushed me into new territory in the best possible way.

If you enjoy character-driven tension, sharp twists, and a grounded investigative vibe, give it a look:

A mysterious male face looms in the background. The tagline at the top says "Three murders. One secret." The title is "The Quiet Hand" with splatters of blood on some of the letters. Below the title is a kukri knife in a soft spotlight, resting on a stone floor. Across the bottom is the text "A novel by Steven Scott Williamson"

My new murder mystery, The Quiet Hand, is now available as an ebook on Lulu.

Three murders in Portland come with easy explanations, but Detective Rebecca Friedrich isn’t buying it. The truth twists beneath the surface, pulling her into something colder—and toward the shadows she hoped she’d left behind.

If you enjoy tense, character-driven crime stories, this one might grab you.

I just finished reading Cahokia Jazz by Francis Spufford. It's set in an alternate 1920s USA in the state of Cahokia. It's centered on a detective relatively new to the city of Cahokia, so you are learning the city through his coming to terms with it. The start is somewhat grisly, but worth getting past that for experiencing the setting. For my part, I enjoyed the atmospherics more than the story itself, but you may feel different.
