Musical Interlude: How about a 70s flashback? OK, it really came out in 1969, but as far as I'm concerned that qualifies it for 70s status as it was still popular for years afterward.

Musical Interlude: In 1990, American composer William Bolcom debuted a short "cabaret opera" called Casino Paradise, about a billionaire developer building a luxury casino at an east coast seaside town. Bolcom long insisted that it was not about Donald Trump, but later confessed that it was "more not about Trump than it was not about anyone else," if you follow. I wonder how often it will be revived now.

It's got problems (a lack of focus, and not rising to the opportunity for satire when it could) but at least it has this stunner of a song, not the typical opera aria, but more a powerful down'n'dirty cabaret ballad.

Musical Interlude: And now something to carry us all away....Earl Bostic had a short life but his skill with the sax has rarely been equaled. He straddled the line between R&B and jazz, creating a unique sound. Here he is in a track from 1958, back when pop culture was space-crazy after the launch of Sputnik in '57.

Musical Interlude: Today is the birthday of one of my favorite composers, Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859-1935). He's criminally overlooked these days. I think he would have made a great film composer; his skill with musical illustration is remarkable. Here's his most famous composition, part of his "Caucasian Sketches" suite.

Musical Interlude: Back in the 90s, some folks got together and did English versions of songs by Brazilian songwriter Ivan Lins. While Sting's track, "She Walks This Earth," won a Grammy, the album itself didn't find a real audience, which is a shame. It's a wonderful sampling of artists and sets a glorious mood for an evening with a loved one. This track, with its gentle upbeat optimism, took a while to grow on me, but now I love it.

Musical Interlude: This song came to mind today for no real reason, so I'm sharing it. I first heard it decades ago, in a small bookstore where they were playing show tunes for whatever reasons. Thankfully there was hardly anyone there; I found myself starting to strut, bump, and grind (subtly) in tune with this song, and it took me years to find out what it was and where I could find it....
