ALL WE WANT
Mastodon Post

Danielle Ponder has a song - a good one - with these lines:

All we want is to be ourselves
And shine our light with no problems
-- "Some of Us Are Brave" by Danielle Ponder

How many people here or anywhere do these lines speak to.

PAUL McCARTNEY'S FINE TRIBUTE TO BRIAN WILSON
Mastodon Post

Originally posted at Facebook

This tribute uses the title of one of Brian Wilson's songs and Beach Boy Alan Jardine used "The Warmth of the Sun." It seems to me "Sail On Sailor" would be apt.

BRATTLEBORO BEACH BOY
Mastodon Post

To my experience, not a lot of Brattleboro people know our area's main connection to The Beach Boys and to their principal composer, Brian Wilson, who just died. Back in the early 1970s, the band's popularity had dropped to near zero. Jack Rieley approached band members with a proposed business plan. Miracle of miracles, they accepted it; and in a relatively short time, The Beach Boys was back to being a hip and popular band once again. Jack was the clear mastermind of this turnaround. One of the Beach Boys biographies says that even people who did not like Jack admitted that he gave The Beach Boys exactly what the group needed. Many years later, Jack Rieley moved into that mansion behind a wrought-iron fence on Orchard Street not too far from Western Avenue, where he lived for several years. He had strong ties to the Marlboro College community and he had an office at the Holstein Association. From conversations, it was very clear that Jack enjoyed working with Brian Wilson and greatly admired him. Jack wrote lyrics for The Beach Boys and his name is usually given first in writer credits for the group's most successful original song of the 1970s, "Sail On Sailor." At the end of his life, Jack thought his health was going to be restored; and he told local people that he was looking into real estate opportunities so he could move back to the area.

BRIAN WILSON DEATH NOTICE FROM HIS CHILDREN
Mastodon Post

Parts of my message to family and friends:

Another of my favorite stories is Brian, having been retired from touring for a very long time, doing an entire Beach Boys concert, performing as Mike Love. One might wonder whether anyone may have taped the show. It must have been the best concert ever.

When Jack Rieley died, online searches showed that a lot of people had been posting, "We love you, Brian."

Attached is the family Facebook death notice post of Brian Wilson plus my comment. Probably it will be necessary to zoom in.

TWO TREMENDOUSLY OVERLOOKED TRACKS
Mastodon Post

According to Bandcamp, as of today, May 15, 2025, I am the only person who has bought either of these two records; and it is a major pity. They are terrific, each in its own way.

More Than Words
by Extreme [Actually by Carolyn Mehta]

missmehta.bandcamp.com/track/m

"More Than Words" by Carolyn Mehta is a cover of a massive 1990 Extreme hit sung very prettily. The Extreme single was playing somewhere in the world 24/7 for months. While this is a cover, it differs from the original Extreme version mainly by being sung in female voices. (Even if done with overdubbing, it still features melody and harmony voices.) In one short passage, it reminds of circa-1970 Beach Boys harmony. I would not want to be without "More Than Words" by Carolyn Mehta. Five Stars for beautiful singing.

I'm Looking Through You
from Next To You by Jenny Reynolds

jennyreynolds1.bandcamp.com/tr

"I'm Looking Through You" by Jenny Reynolds is not a cover but rather it is an interpretation. I remember Jenny Reynolds as a singer-songwriter in and around Boston probably in the early 2000s. This recording of a greatly neglected Beatles song shows her to have made herself into a real song stylist. Web searches seem to show that this is Reynolds' most streamed track and it ought to sell. Five Stars for artistic growth and for giving a new look to a mid-60s song. It is a wonderful match of song and singer.

"WEAVE ME THE SUNSHINE
OUT OF THE FALLING RAIN"
PETER YARROW, 1938-2025
Mastodon Post

Peter Yarrow had one highly unusual distinction. All Music's pick for the best Peter Paul and Mary album wasn't a PP&M record at all. It was Yarrow's "Peter" solo album. It is like Groucho Marx winning three Emmys for the best comedy show when he was actually hosting a game show. The world has lost a wonderful silky voice, a fine songwriter, and a long-time political-activist musician. I compile various artist collections for me, family, and friends to enjoy; and several tracks from the "Peter" album are in play right now. I'll just end by adapting one of those songs.

Goodbye Peter
Goodbye old friend
Your strings are silent
The music ends.....

@Mommacran

The music collection I am compiling has tracks you should hear. The first is by Jacob's Reunion (incorrectly credited to John Coster). The Bandcamp illustration shows Yosef Oxenhandler of that band. RiP Yo.

johncoster.bandcamp.com/track/

It was recorded in the barn by the diner on the road from Brattleboro to Marlboro.

The second is falsely credited to Extreme. Extreme wrote it and had the hit but this is sung very prettily by Carolyn Mehta, whose photograph illustrates this post.

missmehta.bandcamp.com/track/m

To me, it is beyond belief that I am the only person who has bought the Carolyn Mehta track via Bandcamp.

I'm hashtagging this message, against the possibility others may want to hear either of these two beautiful pieces. [It has become necessary to use the hashtag, #musicfeed, to get your posts picked up by the Music Feed.]
