Robin Wall Kimmerer's expanded essay The Serviceberry is my new favorite extremely short and snappy thesis on what we replace capitalism with, and how.

You can read it in an hour, and the metaphors sink in, sweet and bitter, on how reciprocity can overtake colonizing extraction.

The main point is splashed throughout the pages and also on the back cover of the little hardback: "All flourishing is mutual."

A quotation from Victor Hugo

Great perils have this beauty, that they bring to light the fraternity of strangers.

Care to join us for a two part discussion of Robin Wall Kimmerer's "The Serviceberry"? Our Disaster Reading Group, which has been meeting since shortly after Hurricane Helene, has picked this essay-length book on mutuality in nature for the May 12th and June 2nd meetings! This is a perfect chance for new folks to jump in 🤠

As Kimmerer explains, “Serviceberries show us another model, one based upon reciprocity, where wealth comes from the quality of your relationships, not from the illusion of self-sufficiency.”

"The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World" is a bold and inspiring vision for how to orient our lives around gratitude, reciprocity, and community, based on the lessons of the natural world. This series is co-facilitated by Lauren Miller.

On May 12th, we're discussing pages 1 through 50 but you're welcome to join us even if you can't complete the reading! Learn more and find discounted copies of the book at firestorm.coop/events/3392-the

From clownfish and sea anemones teaming up for protection and nutrients 🐠➡️🌊, to bees pollinating flowers while gathering nectar 🐝➡️🌸, mutualism is everywhere. These relationships help whole ecosystems thrive — and remind us that survival isn’t just about fighting, it’s about showing up for each other.

Maybe it’s time we humans took a lesson from the plants and animals. 🌱✊

Liverwort or Hepatica (Hepatica americana) is one of the earliest wildflowers to bloom in northern latitudes. While many insects pollinate the flowers, Hepatica has a seed dispersal method it shares with bloodroot trillium, dutchman’s breeches, trout lily, wild ginger and violets.

Seeds have a nutritious structure called an elaiosome which entices ants to carry away the seeds. The ants eat the elaiosome and then discard the seeds in their dumps which are rich in nutrients. The ants get a good meal and the seeds get dispersed, giving rise to new colonies of Hepatica and new food sources for the ant colony.

Abolishing WTO and NAFTA will not benefit working people here or abroad. Abolishing government would. Stemming cross border trade will not raise the wages of mexican workers, improve conditions in malaysian factories, or lighten the load of chinese farmers and laborers. International trade has not hurt these people: international governments have, by restricting their freedoms in such a way that they have little choice but to slave away at unjust wages for wealthy others. Governments all over the world deny their working subjects economic freedom and favor the interests of the wealthy owners of land and industry, thus impoverishing the many and enriching the few, who in turn enrich the politicians.individualist anarchist Joey PeacottBAD Press anarchy
