More adventures in 3d printing bike packing stuff. Designed a fork cage, since the others either printed in bad orientation (layer weakness) or required a lot of supports. This prints flat on bed with sides at 40°, no need for support. The “sticky-out" part on back is printed separately. I found small roll of TPU and printed out someone's flexible strap model.

A bit of a #sewing update.

The backpack is finished and has been used a few times, and I'm quite happy with it. I'm still writing the instructions to publish on my website, and then I'll post on the blog.

Today it's the patron saint of the city of the place I work for, and in Italy it's a holiday (even if I don't live anywhere near that :) ) so I decided to work on the other backpack.

Yep, because I had already cut the fabric for another backpack, this time to be sewn by machine, and I sort of need it (or rather would like to have it) for a deadline, so having a free day to free up the room for the sewing machine and actually doing some sewing was pretty useful.

This is the front component of my original idea for a two part backpack, inspired by an IKEA model, that started ages ago with the base component documented at sewing-patterns.trueelena.org/…

The base ended up being big enough on its own, but I still wanted to see if the idea was viable, and I have uses for a small backpack anyway.

The basic aim for today was to sew the sides with the zipper, and that's done.

Filed under, “just DO something!” is this mostly easy stuff sack made with a waterproof fabric bought online.
Instructions are pretty good. Cool thing is you enter the dimensions you want (4x4x8” for this one), click Generate and it tells you exactly what size to cut the fabric and then uses those dimensions throughout the instructions.

Just blogged about this mornings project, a first go at a bike stem/feed bag. The post randomly includes tent , mention of @oshwassociation and links to the rocketry panel! Lol anyhoo it's been a fun first attempt. concretedog.blogspot.com/2025/

Nice morning on my sewing machine. I love this machine (passed to my by MIL post her stroke) but it's deffo more a "fancy stitches on light garment" machine than a "sew through a load of layers and webbing"... will post what I made later!

A new tutorial from LearnMYOG (Make Your Own Gear). This one for sewing the new running vest design they sell the plans for. They have free plans, like a bike "feed bag”, card wallet, and running fanny pack should you want to start with something smaller.

Bags are done, waxed, and on the bike. This was an attempt at a removable bottom bag used for the water bladder I shared previously.

The top bag is secured via elastic cord and the two bags interface via interleaving webbing, through which I've got a piece of lightweight wood acting as the binder.

The bottom bag has 3D printed supports on the seat tube and down tube. Each consists of two pieces glued to the inside and outside of the bag.

Anybody have pointers for machine darning thin and stretchy merino wool fabric? The seams are getting somewhat neat, but I can't seem to avoid bunching at one or both ends, which is possible if careful when darning by hand..

A black piece of fabric covers most of the photo, but there's a corner of wooden table to the bottom left. In the middle of the fabric there is a darned former rip with the textile bunching up at the top.

I have a piece of cordura with holes cut out in it

I have a hot air station, technically bought for (de)soldering

I want to have a piece of cordura with holes with stable edges

I have no idea what temperature to use

I should wait until there is an adult in the house to supervise me (and grab the fire blanket if needed), right?

Trail testing some homemade gear. #myog #sewing #hiking

Man with no head wearing a ridiculously bright yellow fleece jacket and wearing a green ripstop nylon daypack, stuffed full of random stuff for testing. There is sage and oak in the background. Man is wearing Merrell boots. Dog with a harness that says DO NOT PET even though the dog likes petting is straining hard on the leash. The black dog is attempting to go down the trail to bark at two extremely out of control large dogs thar some macho dude has but cannot control, and it would be bad news if the dog picked a fight. The black dog also is particularly riled up because he really has to poo.

Did a little tinkering making these superlight stoves from cans. I made one years ago and used it a fair amount. Much lighter than a trangia, but you can't seal them containing fuel so swings and roundabouts.

Two drinks cans with the ends marked with a cut line around 35mm from the ends. A complete stove in hand having just poked holes into it using a reamer. The stove lit. You can see the jets just, a small ball bearing covers the central fill hole.

New sewing experiment. Attempting to make a small daypack using ripstop nylon. (About 25 cents worth LOL). So far, much harder to work with... haven't yet figured out how I will do the straps. Will probably sew them to the outside, won't be as pretty LOL. Should have swapped in the walking foot, ripstop nylon is slippery as heck, some of these will need to be re-sewn and reinforced. #sewing #outdoors #hiking #myog

I'm making a new frame bag for the water bladder I shared in the last post. I've got access to a laser cutter, which I'll be using to cut the panels and other components instead of doing it by hand.

First, I import an image of my bike with a ruler in frame into a document matching the bed size of the cutter. I scale this image, matching ruler dimensions to those within the document. At that point I can easily create shapes to outline the bags.

I sewed a stem bag for my bike and I'm really excited about it! It's my first time sewing one and I made up the pattern so I'm pretty delighted with how it came out.

I used bits of a bag I disassembled for parts, some fabric my mom gave me (the green turkey tail mushroom print fabric) and bands I wove.

There are some things I'll do differently next time, like probably making the bottom square instead of a circle, and making some slightly different fabric choices, like not waxing the lining and drawstring sleeve fabric. And maybe I'll add some ease to the pocket, which can't really fit anything when my water bottle is in there on this one.

@jerzone Nice! I did stem bags as my first #MYOG, which are still the best-made things I've done but have made hip packs and multiple frame bags since.

So I've been using this DIY bag I made the other week loads and I still love it, there's probably a couple of changes I'd make on a next iteration, the front pockets could do with some kind of closure, velcro, zip, or even just a button... If you're wondering what I am waffling on about I also blogged about this project a while back! concretedog.blogspot.com/2025/

A small homemade bag sits on a cutting mat on a desk. The bag is camo cloth but is embellished with rainbow webbing loops, neon orange stitching and a bright orange concretedog logo.
