Helsingin Mätäjoen työmaamoka: taimenet voivat yhä hyvin kevään virheestä ja kesän vaikeista säistä huolimatta

Taimenten kutupadot jäivät väärin rakennetun työmaapadon alle keväällä Pitäjänmäessä. Seurasimme syksyn koekalastusta, jonka tulokset ovat huojentavia.

Mätäjoen meritaimenen kutupesien tuhoamisella voi lopulta olla myönteinen kokonaisvaikutus, arvioi asiantuntija

Ympäristö | Noin 5 000 meritaimenen poikasta saattoi kuolla, kun urakoitsija tuhosi meritaimen kutupesiä Pitäjänmäen Mätäjoella. Helsingin kaupunki ilmoitti keskiviikkona, että Mätäjoen väliaikainen pato puretaan.

Perhokalastajien yhdistyksen rooli tietolähteenä on määritelty yksiselitteisesti myös aluehallintoviraston projektille viime syksynä myöntämän ympäristöluvan ehdoissa.

Alapuolisen jokiosuuden kutualueet selvitetään soraikoita alueella kunnostavalta taholta (Helsingin perhokalastajat ry).

Valitettavasti osa patorakenteesta on tullut taimenten kutupaikkojen päälle.

Väärin sijoitettu pato tullaan purkamaan ja sijoittamaan niin, ettei se aiheuta taimenille haittaa.”

"Väliaikaisen padon rakentaminen liittyy .. Strömbergin puiston peruskorjaukseen Pitäjänmäellä.

Osana peruskorjausta Helsingin kaupunki on päättänyt rakentaa kalatien, jonka avulla harvinainen meritaimen pääsisi kutemaan Mätäjokeen vielä nykyistä pidemmälle.

Urakoitsijan .. mukaan työt on aloitettu tänään ja tehty juuri niin kuin tilaaja eli Helsingin kaupunki on suunnitellut."

Tuhansien meritaimenen poikasten epäillään kuolleen väliaikaisen padon vuoksi Helsingissä – laji on erittäin uhanalainen

Väliaikaisen padon rakentaminen liittyy juuri aloitettuun Strömbergin puiston peruskorjaukseen ja kalatien rakentamiseen.

Helsingin Pitäjänmäellä aloitettiin tiistaina kalatien rakentaminen. Väliaikaisen padon alle jäi tuhansia erittäin uhanalaisen meritaimenen poikasia, arvioi Helsingin Perhokalastajat ry:n asiantuntija.

Today turned out to be a pretty decent day weather-wise. I even felt the warmth of the sun on my face – when the cold wind was courteous enough to stop blowing for a second. Is that a Christmas tree in the river? I think so. A few spiders had also noticed the sun. It's wonderful to see bugs moving on the ground after the winter. The little things in life etc... And floofy tawny owl chicks :) I hope they manage to elude goshawks.

Another beautiful and cold winter day in Helsinki. It's mid-February already, and the sun is rising higher each day – quickly. Today I was properly blinded by the light reflecting off the snow for the first time this year. First signs of spring, I guess. But then the clouds arrived once again. Blegh! I had mostly the same itinerary as before: I explored the Mätäjoki brook and its surroundings and photographed the details that caught my eye.

Frost on a branch here and snow on a rock there. I saw a few horse riders near a large harness racing track. One of them yelled: ”We’re being photographed!” It caught me off guard :D I might have looked a bit suspicious. People were playing disc golf on a nearby hill – created out of a former landfill. The sins of our past are still buried there. The weather encouraged other people to start taking photos. I wonder what the people standing on the rocks were staring at so intently for so long… And finally a photo of a person cleaning up after their dog. I really like the composition.

How was your Sunday?

Oh, the owl… I saw a sleeping tawny owl, too :)

What a day... I was not particularly keen on going out, but I noticed that the sun started to peek through the clouds around midday – so I had to escort myself out of the apartment. I felt a bit sluggish and I was not satisfied with the first photos I got, I rarely am. It takes a while for me to "get in the zone" and stop worrying about people staring at me. How about you?

I decided to visit the only waterfall in Helsinki: Strömberginkoski. As you can see, it's quite modest in size, only about 3 meters tall (~10 feet). Helsinki (and Finland in general) is not known for its waterfalls :D I took a few photos and then headed downstream to see if there was anything interesting in the groves surrounding Mätäjoki.

Ooooohh yeahh, there was. I bumped into a white-tailed deer. The species was introduced to Finland from the US in the 1930s and 40s, and now there are a lot of them. But I don't think I have seen one in Helsinki before. Roe deer are more common.

The deer was not the most exciting animal I saw. I also found a white-backed woodpecker – a bird I had never seen before. In fact, there were two of them. This woodpecker species is quite rare in Finland. They were not the only woodpeckers around: I also stared death (a black woodpecker) in the face once again. It was there as well, minding its own business.

Yep, I'm glad I went for a walk today :)

"Good morning, mister Blackbird. I'm looking for the king and queen of this forest. I trust that the calls of your friends will lead me to them." They did, but the queen was nowhere to be seen – the king was present. After all these years with the goshawks of Helsinki, my heart still skips a beat when I spot one.

I left the forest to see if there was anything else interesting to photograph. The weather was... Well, you see the photos. At least I saw a bit of sunlight for a brief moment. There is little snow left: January was warmer than usual, and February is off to a poor start. But hey, snowberries still look pretty. Speaking of white... While I was walking home, I spotted something moving in the brook next to me: a white-throated dipper at long last.

Today was a refreshing cold day. It also snowed a bit, but the tiny amount we got won't last long :( I decided to visit a nearby brook to see if the freezing temperatures had formed anything interesting to look at. Not really, there was a stick that was wearing an ice helmet. So I had to look for something else to photograph before my freezing fingers would force me to head back home. Did I succeed? Well, I tried. There were a few people out for a walk, some of them birdwatchers walking up and down the brook. One of them asked me if I had seen a white-throated dipper there. I hadn't, but it would have been nice to see one.

Today was – once again – dull, blegh! I took a glance at the weather and removed the colors. You don't want to see them, they were terrible. Nonetheless, I thought it might be possible to find something interesting to point my camera at. I guess the photos could be classified as "attempts at something".

My stroll took me to Mätäjoki (loosely translated as "Putrid River"). To be fair, its water quality is not that bad nowadays. One might even spot trouts in the water. And "Suomen Amazon", according to some joker ("The Amazon of Finland"). The Helsinki tourist board, are you listening? Do you want to run with the idea?

I even found one of its "tributaries". Dad jokes aside, Mätäjoki and the groves surrounding it are actually decent destinations for various outdoor activities and birdwatchers. But it looks prettier in the spring and summer.
