I was at #Costco today. Absolutely packed, even though it was late morning on an ordinary Tuesday. I will be happy when they build the second one we're supposed to be getting.

And out of the hundreds and hundreds of customers, and dozens and dozens of staff I saw, I spotted ... zero people wearing masks of any sort. I was the only one.

Lots of people coughing and sneezing and moaning about being sick, with a brutal flu going round, *and* another mystery virus, along with COVID of course.

FFS. It was the same the other day at my doctor's office. No one wearing a mask.

I think humanity - at least the North American varieties - is waving a big "Hey, viruses, we give up" sign.

There is nothing new, nor controversial about these findings. During #COVID it was clear that exam masks and surgical masks were not appropriate protection against infectious diseases, and only #N95 and its derivatives were. Stop fucking around and #maskup you fools.

Here's the PDF they sent me with the discontinuation notice + reason for ending distribution (lack of sales... sigh); dated May 29th, 2025.

@datum @dianea I invested in a pair of dry-eye prescription glasses with silicone eye cups back in 2023 but don’t use them anymore. It just doesn’t seem like the risk of ocular infection is high enough to add that level of weirdness to my elastomeric #N95. And they tend to fog up, too.

Might want to ditch those KN95 masks and go full N95 if you want to stay healthy.

There’s a significant difference between a mask and a respirator. A surgical mask is just fancy fabric that catches, well, spit. An N95 has an electrostatic charge that grabs particles and holds them. Think about rubbing a balloon on your head and watching your hair stick to it. That’s the science working to keep viruses out of your lungs when you breathe, instead of letting them waltz right in.

This is so insane though. I don’t have to wear a mask but if I do I have to wear one of theirs to make sure mine is clean and effective?

I guess I understand from the perspective that if they make me wear a mask because I’m contagious they want to make sure it works, but if they’re not making me wear a mask it’s ridiculous that I have to wear two because I choose to wear one. But if I choose to not wear any that’s fine.

5/ If you could magically select the right sample of 50% of the times you walk into a store, you could indeed go without an #N95 respirator during those times with hardly any risk. Wouldn't that be great!

But you can't, because you can't know what will happen. I had no way of knowing that someone so actively sick would be right nearby me, hacking away. My mask was on to guard against such a possibility.

2/ When I put that #N95 respirator on the morning I left my van to walk into that courtroom, I was not really expecting to spend hours two seats away from someone coughing and sniffling. It was just what I do now, like making sure the vehicle is locked before walking away. Wastewater levels are still fairly low in this part of the country, last I checked.

But what matters to me is cumulative risk. And that is tricky for our brains to really understand.
