On the one hand, my walk along the #Eno River this morning was about as low-critter as they have all been this fall.

(I'm curious if any #naturalists or river #ecologists or #herpers on here have thoughts about the impact of the massive flooding caused by TS Chantal on the reptiles of the Eno River basin.

I just literally haven't seen a single Nerodia species along the Eno or New Hope Creek since Chantal.)

OTOH, I saw a gorgeous Kingfisher rocketing along the river, so that was awesome.

Wild and Wonderful : An ethnography of English naturalists by Vanessa Manceron,
2025

In Wild and Wonderful, social anthropologist Vanessa Manceron investigates an understudied but indispensable scientific practice: getting to know and recognize the living worlds around us.

library.oapen.org/handle/20.50

Observing the natural world here is regarded not as a simple hobby, but as a necessary activity. This is participatory science, an itinerant brand of scholarship that immerses itself in a specific and delimited territory, meticulously documenting the species living there and how they develop and expand their domain or regress and disappear. Manceron leads us through woods and fields, showing us another way of looking, of paying attention to minute differences, sounds, and variations of color. Her book is both a contribution to the anthropology of science and an opportunity to take a fresh look at our relationship with nature, affording us a glimpse of another way of living and living with.

In Springfield, MA until Monday for the Northeast Natural History Conference (NENHC). Anyone else?

Any locals wanna recommend a good greenspace to visit? (Edit) It looks like tomorrow, Friday is the only non-rainy day during my stay. I'm on the wait list for a field trip to Vermont in the afternoon, but I'll get out one way or another.

I'll be at #Esquimalt #GorgeWaterway /Kinsmen park in a few hours to join the invasive green crab monitoring team. It's another trapping/netting day & I'll be documenting some of the project's work.

[ Since 2022, we have participated in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ European Green Crab Monitoring Project. European green crabs are a destructive invasive species that removes eelgrass very efficiently, destroying habitat for everything else in the Gorge. Unfortunately, we caught adult European green crabs in the Gorge for the first time in August 2024 through our monitoring program.

We are working with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Peninsula Streams Society to remove as many as possible before the problem worsens. To prevent the spread of European Green Crabs, make sure to clean, drain, and dry off any watercraft according to BC Invasives. ]
