Happy Jackie Robinson Day

Yesterday I received a 1,200+ word press release from Major League Baseball setting
forth all of the things it's doing in honor of the anniversary of Jackie Robinson's debut
with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. You can read that here.

Not surprisingly, nowhere does it mention that Rob Manfred ordered the elimination
of Major League Baseball's Diversity Pipeline Program and scrubbed MLB's website of
references to diversity, equity, and inclusion because he believes that currying favor
with our racist president and his fascist administration is more important than racial
equality or improving the very entity which he oversees.

As you see all the players wearing number 42 today, as you watch the commemorative
videos and tributes, and as you hear the announcers and various media talking heads
speaking about Jackie Robinson, do not forget, for one moment, that Major League
Baseball is run by cowards who do not give a single shit about Jackie Robinson's
example or his legacy beyond how they can use it to make themselves look good. |
They'll say they do, but it's all eyewash. Every bit of it. What they have done defines
them.

In times like these, what we need the most is a chart of every major league team's every major league season, ever. I am happy to be able to deliver. #baseball #mlb #negroleagues
A timeline chart, over 30,000 pixels wide, with dozens of rows, and columns from 1876 to 2024. Colored stripes and arrows show baseball teams season by season, including name changes, moves to other cities, pennants, World Serieses, and year of racial integration. The chart includes essentially all data from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Major_League_Baseball.

Cristobal Torriente was a Cuban outfielder who played for a number of US Negro League teams for two decades, going back as far as 1912. There were a few Hispanic players in the Majors before 1947, but they were light-skinned and often born in the US. Al Lopez and Lefty Gomez come to mind. Very obviously, another example of the double standards of the time.

This is very important. Not at all ancient history -- very much in living memory. When he says he could've been killed, it is not an exaggeration. #baseball #baseballhistory #blackhistory #reggiejackson #mlb #negroleagues #williemays

Willie Mays' death added poignancy to MLB’s celebration of the Negro Leagues at Alabama's Rickwood Field — the nation’s oldest professional ballpark and where Mays got his start as a professional. japantimes.co.jp/sports/2024/0

Although it should have happened long before now, that MLB game played at #RickwoodField today was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I wish Willie and Buck (and many others) had been able to see it.

The irony isn't lost on me that on the night the #saintlouiscardinals & #mlb honor the #negroleagues , a St Louis based #republican candidate for state AG told black people to "leave the US"

Don't let the first story overshadow the second.

MLB will be honoring the Negro Leagues and the legendary Willie Mays with a televised game today at America's oldest ballpark, Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Ala. Both teams will be wearing Negro Leagues uniforms — the Cardinals will wear St. Louis Stars kits, while the Giants will wear San Francisco Sea Lions jerseys. On June 17, the day before he died, Mays gave a statement to the San Francisco Chronicle about the game. "My heart will be with all of you who are honoring the Negro League ballplayers, who should always be remembered, including all my teammates on the Black Barons," he said. Here's more from TODAY about the history of Rickwood Field, preparations for the game, and how to watch it.
