🧪 In this week's issue of Science Signaling, Cho et al. show that the acetyltransferase GCN5 mediates inflammation in the brain in mice. GCN5 acetylated p65 to enable its transcriptional activity, inducing inflammatory cytokine production. GCN5 inhibitors blocked this response. #Neuroinflammation

The #BloodBrainBarrier (BBB) prevents immune cells & pathogens from entering the brain. This study shows that during #neuroinflammation in #Drosophila, immune cells can cross the BBB by degrading its ECM through a JAK/STAT-regulated pathway #plosbiology plos.io/4k1TTIG

k-means clustering identifies highly different populations contralaterally vs ipsilaterally in an ischemic stroke model but offers a heterogeneous cluster composition.

A T2-weighted MRI acquisition of the tMCAO rat brain 24 hours after reperfusion (top). Z maximum projections of IBA1 staining of microglia on the ipsilateral side to the lesion (bottom left) and contralateral side (bottom right). Scale bar: 20 µm. B Scatter plot with each dot representing one microglia from the complete dataset (ipsilateral and contralateral), plotted in function of their PC1 against PC2 values from the PCA conducted on all 20 initial morphological parameters. The colors represent the clusters identified by the k-means method, and the ‘x’ symbols are the centers of each cluster. C All microglia from the dataset with colors associated to their affiliated cluster: green corresponds to cluster 1 (ramified microglia), blue corresponds to cluster 2 (activated microglia), yellow corresponds to cluster 3 (amoeboid microglia) and pink to cluster 4 (rod-like microglia). The white crosses indicate cells that exhibit morophological characteristics that should categorize them in another cluster. D Pie chart illustrating the proportion of each cluster constituting the contralateral and ipsilateral sides.

Post-COVID neuroinflammation (WP5485)

This is a WikiPathways biological pathways diagram. This pathway visualizes the direct and indirect route of SARS-CoV-2-mediated neuroinflammation, which may induce dysautonomia, a major post-COVID symptom. The direct and indirect route are subdivided in a neurological and hematological, and a neurological and humoral route, respectively.

🧬 Excited to share findings from a collaboration on #Alzheimer's! 🧬 Our team contributed RNA-seq analysis to explore how FAAH inactivation influences neuroinflammation and microglial function. This study reveals a paradox: while FAAH inactivation enhances microglial activity, it also escalates inflammation in 5xFAD AD mice. Results could point to FAAH as a therapeutic target in AD! #Neuroinflammation #Microglia #Endocannabinoids #RNAseq #ScienceCollab #bioinformatics

Graphical abstract showing that a loss of heterochromatin Protein 1 leads to a loss of H3K9me3, de-repression of endogenous retroviruses, and a neuroinflammatory phenotype involving activated astrocytes and microglia. The result is similar to age-dependent neuroinflammation and progeria models.

Looking for help learning about #Neuroinflammation and potential treatments. I had multiple seizure-like episodes last weekend and was miserable for several days (low mood, irritability, low energy, anxiety that seemed to be physiological). It suddenly improved last night and I feel great today. Neuroinflammation has been proposed as a possible cause but I haven’t been able to find a neurologist who can help, so I’d like to share research with my doctor. Thank you. #MECFS @mecfs

Multiple infectious “hits” (viral and bacterial) may amplify long-term neuroinflammatory or neuroimmune symptoms in patients with #LongCovid.

In a study in rats, brain exposure to #SarsCoV2 spike subunit drove long-term vulnerability not only to #neuroinflammation, but also to forms of #AutonomicDysregulation such as increased heart rate and core body temperature.
