Here is a review of my #memoir about my father's early-onset #Alzheimer's & the unbearable grief of watching a loved one die of #dementia. #Neurologist Dr. Bruce Miller wrote it w/me & explains the brain health (or sickness) behind the clinical presentations I saw: word-finding difficulties, spatial disorientation, behavioral anomalies, memory loss. The 1st chapter is on diagnosis. If this resonates, I am sorry. Readers have said the book has helped. bookshop.org/shop/WeAreHFC

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerfully relates a human experience and should be read by anyone and everyone
Weinstein has penned a raw and poignant memoir that processes, reflects, and reprocesses her father’s experience with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Decades after her beloved father’s passing, Cindy Weinstein, a literature professor, connects with Bruce Miller, a dementia neurologist. As such, the writings of Weinstein and Miller are interleaved within each chapter, which provides the reader a fascinating juxtaposition of the inner minds of a literature professor and an eminent neurologist as they share their distinct perspectives on Jerry’s illness. Weinstein writes with her mind wide open, like the pages of one’s intimate diary, showing incredible strength and vulnerability as she reflects and reconsiders the past. Miller writes clearly and compassionately, and not only provides an understandable scientific background to Jerry’s symptoms and situations, but also the historical context of the understanding of dementia. This unique and powerful book relates a universal human experience and should be read by anyone and everyone.

Happy birthday to #neurologist Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852 - 1934), here in front of Purkinje and granule cells from a pigeon, based on one of his own drawings! Cajal &Golgi won the Nobel in 1906, “in recognition of their work on the structure of the nervous system”. He was as much of an artist as he was a scientist & his 100s of drawings are still used for teaching purposes.

Born in 1852, in Petilla de Aragón, Spain, 🧵1/n

Day 21 cont

2025 April 19
“Surgeon under investigation over ‘chilling’ video of him tearing down teal’s corflute: This video is a stark reminder of the breadth of harmful misogynistic attitudes across the community.

“What we saw in that video was not just vandalism – it was a chilling display of misogyny and intimidation.”

A spokesperson for Ryan’s campaign confirmed on Friday that a donation made by (Prof.) #GregMalham had been rejected and his money refunded.

Ryan – a #paediatric #neurologist, #researcher and #professor prior to her political career – said the video was deeply concerning, but not an isolated incident.”

The fact that Ryan worked in the same medical field at the same level (ie: Colleagues) makes this a *targeted* action.

Up at 2 am with a #migraine that won't go away. When I last saw my family doctor she tried to help. Both of my biological grandfathers died of a brain tumor. I can't afford to get checked or treated for migraines or see if they are caused by a tumor. My doctor ordered a MRI, but after insurance I would still owe $800, which I obviously can't afford so that is that. She also prescribed me meds specifically for migraines but my #insurance wouldn't cover it because it was $2300 a month, if you can believe it. I still set an appointment with a #neurologist. The first appointment will only be $45 after insurance so I will at least get to see what he says, but believe or not I cannot get into to see him until July. After that whatever attempts he makes to get me checked I will likely not afford because my insurance will not cover his attempts to narrow down that is causing the #migraines that have been consistent for years now. But it will be good to get a specialist's opinion. It's just wild how impossible it is to get treatment of something I might die from.

Thank you #EastChinaNormalUP for translating into Chinese Finding the Right Words: A Story of Literature, Grief, and the Brain, which was originally published in English by #JohnsHopkinsUniversityPress. #Neurologist Dr. BruceMiller and I are so honored, and I know my father, Jerry, for whom the book is written, would have wanted his experience known so that it might help others. He was a wonderful human being -- when he had his memory and when he didn't.

On 2.21, I along w/#UCSF #neurologist Bruce Miller & Dr. Luis Martinez will be speaking in an #Alzheimer'sAssociation webinar, "Narrative Showcase: Dementia Stories for Impact." We will share our stories of the #grief, inseparable from the #love, that comes w/watching someone you love suffer in the way #dementia causes suffering. We hope that telling those stories, through writing, helps those who are suffering as they watch, care, grieve. Here is the link to register.

Johns Hopkins UP is discounting all its books by 50% w/code HCYB24. Free shipping w/purchases over $50.

Please consider supporting this wonderful press. I'm so lucky my #memoir, written with #neurologist Dr. Bruce Miller, is on its health & wellness list. Readers say it has helped them understand #dementia (esp. early-onset Alzheimer's, which is what my father had), be kind about their own #grief, and hear me talk about how literature, esp. #Moby-Dick, resonates.

20-minute routine EEGs will capture seizure activity somewhere between 20-60%. Worse in comatose patients.

Not great.

There's a shift happening in how we think about what a proper EEG requires.

This relatively non-expensive, non-invasive diagnostic test gives us great insights into the health of someone's brain to better treat and prognosticate.

We just need to give it a little time. The payout for ordering a long term study is much, much higher.

Because we know everything Trump says about others is a projection, his comments about Blacks, Hispanics, and Jews needing to get their heads examined makes clear that he knows he needs his own head examined.
