Work to transform former industrial park for 200 home development underway

The Ewenny Road Industrial Estate site was formerly home to the cosmetics company, Revlon’s factory – later taken over by Creative Outsourcing Solutions International (Cosi), and adjacent automotive parts manufacturer, Cooper Standard’s factory.

Using Cardiff Capital Region funding, Bridgend County Borough Council and Clowes Developments are working together to remove redundant infrastructure from the derelict site, ensure that previous mine shafts and culverts are filled in, and that unused pipes and cables can be diverted.

With planning permission already in place, this work will make the site ready for a developer to carry out new landscaping and construction which will include up to 200 new homes, new public open space, new retail units, and a new enterprise and employability hub.

Bridgend County Borough Council say that part of the overall site will also be used to develop new employment opportunities and a transport interchange that will ensure people can travel outside of the valley for additional work and training purposes.

Councillor Neelo Farr, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economic Development and Housing, said: “This ambitious project forms part of our Local Development Plan and has been carefully designed to ensure that it meets local housing, employment, and transportation needs.

“Once Clowes have completed the ground works, they will have transformed this former industrial estate into our largest local valleys brownfield site with more than 16 acres available for redevelopment.

“At the same time, the council is retaining an additional three acres so that we can develop new employment opportunities and a modern transport interchange.

“The finished project will deliver huge economic and social benefits for both the Llynfi Valley and Bridgend County Borough, and I am delighted to see that the work is making swift progress.”

Marc Freeman, Development Director at Clowes said: “We are extremely pleased that this major regeneration project has finally commenced which will bring much needed new homes and amenities to the area.

“It has been refreshing to work with Cardiff Capital Region and Bridgend County Borough Council, who have been so focused on delivering the project.”

Minister visits council’s latest ‘More Homes’ development

Swansea Council say they are in the process of creating 13 new homes in the community of Manselton. The mix of one-bedroom flats and three-bedroom houses are part of the Council’s award winning ‘More Homes’ programme.

Andrea Lewis, the Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Service Transformation welcomed Ms Bryant to the city to showcase the latest energy saving homes, which have been created on council land in the city, following demolition of an older council building that was no longer in use.

Also included on the tour were cabinet representatives from neighbouring councils, including Pembrokeshire, Neath & Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire.

Once completed, the development will see a total of 13 new homes, comprising of 8 one-bedroom flats and 5 three-bedroom houses, all featuring energy efficient technology, including solar panels, battery storage and ground source heating, all designed to keep homes warmer and energy bills to a minimum.

The latest phase of work is part of the Council’s wider More Homes programme which has already created more than 280 additional council homes the city.

Cllr Lewis said she was extremely proud to be able to showcase the latest housing developments in the city. She said: “This is a great opportunity to showcase what Swansea is doing in terms of creating much needed new housing in the city.

“Welsh Government has been very supportive in terms of assisting with funding to introduce modern technology to the homes we are building and ensuring tenants can benefit from very low energy bills.

“Brondeg House was previously identified as surplus to requirements. Part of our strategy has been to look at former council-owned sites across the city where we can develop new homes and add to our current housing stock.

“Importantly, this latest scheme includes a number of one-bedroom properties, which are very much in demand in Swansea.

“This is part of a significant investment by the Council and we have committed to spending £250 million during the next five years.

“I’m confident this new development will follow the example made by previous More Homes schemes we have completed in recent years – providing modern, safe and warm homes for families or individuals.”

Penllergaer football club nets backing from local housebuilder

Penllergaer AFC has received a contribution of £250 from Bellway Wales, which is building new properties at its Parc Mawr development, off Brynrhos Crescent, to the south of the village.

The money will be used to support the day-to-day running of the club and to fund new equipment, such as goalposts for the junior teams.

The club has up to 200 players on its books and runs seven junior boys’ teams, three junior girls’ teams and one senior men’s team. The senior team, which plays in Division 2 of the Swansea Senior League, plays its home games at Penllergaer Playing Fields while the junior sides play at the Penllergaer Sports and Social Club.

Matthew Porch, Chairman at Penllergaer AFC, said: “We get a grant from Sport Wales but the rest of the money that the club needs to keep going is raised through subscriptions and donations such as the one from Bellway Wales. The money will help enormously but it is also great for us as a village-based club to have the support of a such a prestigious company with a high profile in the area.

“There is a lot of equipment, such as goalposts, bibs, cones and balls, which needs replacing on a regular basis as it gets so much wear and tear. We also like to have at least one coach per team who has a recognised sport leadership qualification and that means we often have to pay for those people to study to gain that certification.

“It is a constant challenge to try to raise the funds needed to run this club but we are determined to carry on providing a place where local youngster and their families can come along, socialise and play the game they love in a safe and caring environment.”

Rhodri Davies, Sales Manager at Bellway Wales, said: “Matthew embodies the huge commitment that many volunteers make week in, week out up and down the country, to keep grassroots clubs going. His dedication is clear to see as he not only took over as chairman of the club last year but is also a coach of a junior side and plays on the wing for the senior men’s team.

“When Matthew approached us to ask if we were interested in supporting the club, we were very keen to help out. It is good to hear that our donation will be used to help the club carry on providing a sporting outlet for scores of youngsters in the area.

“At Bellway we strive to have a positive impact in the communities where we build new homes and this link-up with Penllergaer AFC is a demonstration of that. We wish Matthew and all of the teams at the club the best of luck for the rest of the season.”

Bellway is building 184 homes at Parc Mawr, including a mix of three and four-bedroom properties for private sale.

Carway Primary School helps housebuilder’s development blossom in time for Spring

Having previously donated soil and gardening kits to the school, the visit saw 20 foundation pupils put their skills to the test by planting crest, pea, wildflower and sunflower seeds in eco-friendly plant pots, with gardening kits supplied by Dandara.

The planting collaboration aims to support the growing decline of insect pollinators across Wales, with threats including habitat loss, environmental pollution, climate change and the spread of alien species. Planting new flowers will ensure pollinators receive habitats rich in nectar and pollen for food and suitable wild spaces for nests and hibernation.

Catrin Melly, Teacher at Carway Primary School, commented: “As we approach the warmer months, we have begun to incorporate wildlife and nature into our curriculum, so this activity at Golwg Gwendraeth was a great chance for the pupils to get hands on experience in how to help the local pollinators. Dandara supports us with essential resources and activities that can be aligned with our lessons is fantastic, and we look forward to coming back once the seeds have blossomed!”

Sara Taylor, Sales Director at Dandara Wales & West, said: “Continuing our partnership with Carway School over the next year will allow us to grow our relationship and work with the pupils on a number of important campaigns. Welcoming the children to the development was an educational opportunity for them to gain hands on experience and learn new skills about the importance of nurturing wildlife hubs. It was enlightening to see the passion all the pupils had during the activity, and we hope everyone enjoyed the day!”
