#newbie

2026-01-20

It’s my #birthday (yes, and I'll cry if I want to, lol) and the start of #365to50. I’m moving my 30 years of editorial experience from #underground #fanzines and #webpublishing into the technical sphere.

I immensely enjoy #FOSS and #fediverse ideas and philosophy, and while I am still a very #linux #newbie , I'd like to start giving back to the community. I’m looking for #FOSS projects that need high-quality Slovak or Czech localization ( #L10n ).

If your documentation or UI needs an editor’s touch to feel truly native, let’s talk!

@stenskott that’s the beauty of this system. Brows around. Follow hashtags or people. It’s been a very chill experience in the few days I’ve been on here. #mastadon #forkivese #newbie

Inspired by @ele selfhosting journey and I trying to get all this working and what I started from is getting Ghost working inside Yunohost.
Not that I want to publish a paid newsletter, I just thinking about moving from Medium and I like Ghost's post editor 😜

But I guess I did something wrong or whatever. Does yunohost allow install app like ghost right at domain root? Without some path like `/blog`? If that "blog" path added, Fediverse features seems to not work.

Linux explorations I have done since getting my first Linux laptop ever:
Tried 5 different flavours of Linux and settled on Mint Cinnamon.
Dug into why my battery was draining so quickly (it is the 1password app) with system monitors and power consumption.
Printed from Libre Writer!
Installed jupyter notebook so I can play with my sunspot prediction code.
Been utterly shocked at the weight difference between my 16in screen MacBook Pro and the 14in Dell Latitude.

Just setup GraphineOS for my first Android experience. Piloting it without a phone number for now. Any cool tips, tricks, and resources are welcome! #graphineos #newbie

I have something fitting for week 75 and 76 of #ShowMeYourKnits as I am very new into knitting and basically everything is a first and a wip :D I started just learning the stitches and then tried increasing and decreasing with a free version of the #sophiescarf. #newbie #knit #NewlyKnitter #beginner

Happy to be arriving in the Fediverse after ditching Facebook and the lot! I'm looking forward to meeting new people who are set on making magic on an independent web.

I used to do blogging on Wordpress for years and met a lot of really interesting friends and mutual inspiration, until it became a sea of ineffective shouting into a hole whilst trying to fight off attention highjacking

Here's to better!

hmm. I've got a #newbie #css #question.

The goal: have the image as tall as 95% of the `svh`, provided the image's aspect ratio wouldn't result in its width being more than 100% of the <figure> container.

If you resize the window, the image maintains aspect ratio and resizes itself accordingly.

In #Firefox this works. In #Vivaldi it does not.

what am I doing wrong?

see it in action: tlohde.com/mapping/gallery/top

```css
.featuredImg {
width: 90vw;
margin-left: calc(50% - 45vw);
margin-right: calc(50% - 45vw);
margin-top: 1lh;
margin-bottom: 1lh;
}
.featuredImg img {
max-width: 100%;
max-height: 95svh;
height: auto;
width: auto;
display: block;
}
```

```html
<figure class="feautredImg">
<img src="/myImage-200w.webp"
alt="my nice alt text'"
srcset="/myImage-200w.webp 200w, /myImage-300w.webp 300w, /myImage-640w.webp 640w, /myImage-828w.webp 828w, /myImage-1080w.webp 1080w, /myImage-1200w.webp 1200w, /myImage-2048w.webp 2048w"
fetchpriority="high"
loading="eager"
sizes="auto"
decoding="async"
width="2048"
height="1448">
Hallo! Mein Name ist Michelle Tharwyn und ich bin ganz neu hier.
Kurz zu mir: Ich bin 31, Autorin im Selfpublishing. Ich habe letztes Jahr mein Fantasy-Roman »Saint Gloria Moon Academy - Revenge« herausgebracht.
Gibt es hier so was wie eine Art Buchbubble?
I'm a newbie here, so maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like there aren't many FediEuropeans around here. If you're there, make some noise!
I'm figuring out how this thing works. I wanna find more people posting pictures here so I can draw them on mspaint
I'm too old to figure this out easily. So I though I was on Mastadon through my Vivaldi browser, initially on my phone. Then I came here on my Linux desktop. Now I discover I'm on 2 different servers... how to meld, can't seem to log on to Vivaldi's, don't know how I ever created an account here. #MastadonNewbie #newbie
So thankful for all of you who have followed me on here so far, and made me feel so welcome! I'm very new to this platform still, but I'm loving it! Here's to more great sex, kink, and general shenanigans, friends!🥰
Finally made it onto my server here on Mastodon at defcon.social. Pretty new to the fediverse, but I’m jumping in anyway. Time to dig around, do some research, and figure out how things work around here. Looking forward to seeing what kind of chaos and brilliance I’ve wandered into.
