Das ist der Iris Nebel (NGC 7023) in der Cepheus Konstellation, etwa 1300 Lichtjahre von uns entfernt. Es handelt sich hier um einen Reflexionsnebel, er leuchtet also nicht selbst, sondern reflektiert das Licht des Sterns SAO 10158 in seinem Zentrum. Umgeben wird der Nebel von dunklen Wolken interstellarem Staubs.

The Iris Nebula

The Iris Nebula, located at a distance of about 1.300 light-years from earth in the constellation Cepheus, is a reflection nebula, which means that it shines by reflecting the light of the star SAO 19158, which is located in the center of the nebula. It’s also known as the “Flower Nebula” due to its shape and colors. The nebula is surrounded by dark clouds of interstellar dust, which give it its distinctive shape.

Image of the beautiful Iris Nebula. NGC 7023 is about 6 light-years across, and 1,300 light-years away. Within the Iris, dusty nebular material surrounds a massive, hot, young star in its formative years. Central filaments of cosmic dust glow with a reddish photo-luminesence, as some dust grains effectively convert the star's invisible ultraviolet radiation to visible red light. Yet the dominant color of the nebula is blue, characteristic of dust grains reflecting starlight. Dark, obscuring clouds of dust and cold molecular gas are also present and can lead the eye to see other convoluted and fantastic shapes. Infrared observations indicate that this nebula may contain complex carbon molecules known as PAHs.

Magnitude 6.8 reflection nebula located 1,300 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus. The designation NGC 7023 refers to the open cluster within the larger reflection nebula designated LBN 487.

OK, let's test this with an #astrophotography post.

This is my current #WIP: the Iris Nebula in Cepheus. So far, I've combined nearly 12 hours of 5 minute exposures to star revealing not just the beautiful reflection nebula in the center (dust reflects light from a relatively hot star), but the dark clouds of interstellar dust and cold molecular hydrogen.

I hope to push this past 20 hours of imaging over May and June. #Caldwell4 #NGC7023
