pretty stoked having pushed a huge update to https://github.com/stef/klutshnik
it is now all based on liboprf.
rewrote the server in #zig, the python client has also been completely rewritten. threw out the macaroons and the opaque-storage back-end, this simplified and made the whole thing a bit more secure also.
still some work left before this can go into production, but this is a big leap already. pheeew.
We're delighted to welcome on board 11 #FOSS projects that will contribute to the 3 NGI Pilot programmes.

42 Free & Open Source projects will receive grants to reclaim the public nature of the internet from the NGI0 Commons Fund.
There were many applicants & it's wonderful to see the number of people working on digital commons, inventing & improving technologies to the benefit of all humanity.
We'd like to take this space to thank *all* applicants for their contributions to an internet for people rather than for profit.
Come meet the new projects! https://nlnet.nl/news/2025/20250422-announcement-grants-CommonsFund.html

In a new #podcast episode we talk to team members of @LibreQoS. The software helps ISPs fight #bufferbloat & distribute traffic fairly. In a lively conversation they talk about the vital importance of stable internet connections and their reasons for open sourcing LibreQoS: they hoped it would help a few small ISPs that bring internet access to under-served communities. But to their surprise LibreQoS has become very popular with deployments in 58 countries.

We're kicking off season 2 of the NGI Zero podcast with Armijn Hemel of DeviceCode. The electronics industry works differently than most people think. Behind the different brands and casings is often the same hardware, created by a single factory.
But security issue disclosure focuses on single devices, so vulnerabilities in similar devices go unnoticed.
DeviceCode uncovers the hidden patterns of the electronics industry to improve security.
You're invited to join the Open Source #webinar by #NGI0 partner @ow2 this afternoon at 16.00 CEST. Simon Descarpentries / @siltaer will be speaking about his #FOSS project @metapress, a Firefox extension that lets you explore news without trackers and snooping companies.
And Didier Barzin will talk about Mercator, an open source web application designed to map information systems.
Participation is free but you do need to register: https://www.ow2.org/view/webinar/webinar_4
>> New interview in our APC series "Building a #FreeInternetOfTheFuture"
We spoke with Nathalie from @karrot about "what free software can mean to self-organising and local communities."

There is also https://github.com/n0-computer/iroh-willow which is under construction and based on the #Willow protocol. This is also a foundational #p2p technology, which received funding by @nlnet under the EU Horizons #NGI0 programs, to evolve their specifications.
Willow contains among others a specification for support of object capabilities, called Meadowcap, which is very interesting.

We are happy to announce that 56 teams and individuals will receive funding to support their work on improving the core technologies of the internet.
We'd like to congratulate them and thank them for making the internet better for us all.
Come and take a look at the projects to see the marvellous work being done to upgrade the open internet architecture.

Would you like to represent NGI Zero in your region? NGI0 partner Brno University of Technology is looking for regional representatives in specific regions. It's a part-time, paid role where you'll be encouraging people to apply for funding, build a community and promote free and open source.
Note that only certain regions are eligible and you need to be based in the region of your choice. (See the list of regions at the bottom of the page).

NGI Zero partner CCBV is looking for a freelance technical writer with cryptographic expertise. You'll be helping out free and open source projects in the cryptographic space with their technical writing needs. This kind of practical support is part of the NGI0 funding programs.
It's a part-time, freelance role with the amount of work depending on the number of requests for support. Check CCBV for more info and contact details for questions.

The Flow Battery Research Collective (FBRC) are building an open source battery. Technology writer Koen Vervloesem did a nice write-up about their #FOSDEM talk in the Energy devroom. FBRC works on redox flow batteries which are better suited for long-term, stationary storage and less hazardous than Li-ion batteries. FBRC plan to democratize flow battery technology by developing an open source flow battery, starting with a development kit.

"This project was a journey to own our software again", says Julien Malka / @luj in the NGI0 podcast. He and Camille Mondon / @kms have implemented Clevis in NixOS to make it possible to remotely reboot servers with full disk encryption. The project was extended to port the Proxmox Hypervisor on NixOS. In this episode they explain their project and talk about self-hosting as a way to empower people to own a little part of the internet.
