I don't post about local things as much as I'd like to here, since we are still building up community on niagara.social, so I haven't posted about what's been going on at City Hall, but I wanted to share this statement.

The approach many local politicians have taken to encampments and houseless has been grimly racist, classist and ableist, all with a smiling face as per usual in 21st century Canadian settler colonialism. I am very thankful for all of the work the NRNC does, and for this statement in particular.

The Niagara Regional Native Centre has made the decision to step back from this year’s Indigenous Peoples Day flag raising at City of St. Catharines City Hall. This decision was made after thoughtful discussions within our organization and with members of the Indigenous community. As a Centre, we share the growing concerns around the ongoing approaches to addressing homelessness — particularly the treatment of encampments — and feel that participating in the ceremony at this time would be inconsistent with our values and priorities. Indigenous people continue to be overrepresented among those experiencing homelessness — a direct result of colonization, residential schools, the child welfare system, and ongoing systemic barriers. We believe that meaningful, culturally informed solutions must be developed in partnership with Indigenous communities - not through punitive or enforcement-based responses. We remain committed to working with the City of St. Catharines to address these issues in a way that centres dignity, compassion, and the wellbeing of all.
