It's July 1st, and you know what that means: Happy Canada Day!

(Cross-posted from my site, where there are additional photos: andrewflenniken.com/2025/07/01)

I was born, and mostly grew up, in the province of New Brunswick, which is where these photos were taken.  Autumn there is stunningly beautiful, with the maples changing to brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows.  My love for the season, and for backlit leaves generally, has its source in those woods.  And today gives me an out of season reason to share both.  ;)

Another quiet week around here, so going back to last month's visit to the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge for today's shots.

(Cross-posted from my site, where there are additional photos. Of seals! andrewflenniken.com/2025/06/27)

One of the things I love about that place is the view of Rainier you get when you're out on the boardwalk over the tidal flats.  On a good day it looms over the intervening hills in dramatic fashion, reflected in the water.  Which, I think, makes for a great shot from an angle you don't often get to see.

And then looking in the other direction, at Nisqually river, you are sometimes graced with a couple of seals playing in the water.  Great stuff to see in every direction down there.  :)

Color photo. A sandy tidal flat, covered in pools of water, in the bottom half of the frame. Dead trees poke up from the sand in various places, and white birds line the edge of a pool. On the distant shore, a green tree-lined hill rises up, and beyond that, looming over all, is the snow-capped peak of Mount Rainier.

Happy Solstice! First day of summer for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, and thus the longest day of the year.

I've never been much of a "Summer" person (Autumn is my favorite season), but I'm warming to them as I get older.  ;)  These photos were taken in summers past, and I'm looking forward to seeing what this year's summer brings.

Color photo. An earthen path with tufts of grass growing in the middle leads up from the bottom of the frame. It curves slightly to the left before disappearing into a mass of magenta flowers and green trees at mid-frame. On either side of the path is golden grass, dotted with tall clumps of magenta, pink, and white flowers. The deep blue sky is filled with long lines of puffy white clouds matching the angle of the path below.

I love an active sky, with different layers and types of cloud. This shot, which I took a few weeks ago, even has a slight rainbow on the right.

Since all of the photos in the last post were black & white, I figured I'd do a post of colorful photos from the same trip.  :)

(Cross-posted from my site, where there are additional photos: andrewflenniken.com/2025/06/13)

All of these were taken at Deception Pass State Park, mostly in the Rosario Head area.  The lead photo is, I think, Broadleaf Stonecrop.  I've seen it before in other places growing, as its name implies, from cracks in stone, and its shock of bright color against grey rock always grabs my eye.

I've also included a color version of one of the photos from the prior post.  While I, personally, like it best in black & white, it works in color too I think.

Color photo. A plant growing out of a crack in a lichen covered rock. The plant has a long orange stem that fades to yellow-green at the end, where it splits out into a cluster of flowers with green and yellow petals. The stem is has a collection of small leaves growing from it that match the color of the part of the stem they grow from. The base, at the crack, is a collection of larger orange leaves, with smaller green ones beside them.

I took a trip up to Deception Pass State Park with my friend Lisa of Kyr Creates yesterday.  She set up in Bowman Bay to paint, and I hiked from there out to Rosario Head to do some photography.

(Cross-posted from my site, where there are additional photos: andrewflenniken.com/2025/06/11)

We couldn't have asked for better weather; it was sunny and warm, without being hot, and the sky was filled with my beloved wispy clouds.  The hike was very pleasant, not being too long or too strenuous, and the views along the way were spectacular.  Highly recommended.

There's something about the combination of water, sky, and cloud that lends itself to black and white photography.  I hope you enjoy these!  A couple of them are strong contenders to be added to my print store; let me know which one (or ones!) you think I should add.

Whenever I see a hole going right through a tree stump or trunk I always think "There's a fairy door".

This one was right around the corner from where I took the shot I called "Poseidon's Door", so I guess the Olympic Peninsula is just chock full of doorways to other realms.

That's probably why I like it so much.  :D

The last week has been fairly quiet on the photography front, so I went looking through my library to find something to post that I hadn't shown yet. Which is when I realized I'd done a whole day trip out to the coast in April that I'd never written about!

This was another result of a migration alert on BirdCast, which I mentioned in a prior post. I have an alert set for the Aberdeen / Grays Harbor area, and when it pinged in late April I decided to head down and see what kind of shots I could get.

People often ask me why I love visiting the Great Ocean Road in winter. This is the reason - the waterfalls are full and the Otway forest is so green.

I spent Memorial Day weekend camping at the beach with a couple of friends, on Washington state’s Olympic Peninsula. We were fortunate to have had fantastic weather the first two days (never a guarantee here this time of year), and I had a great time shooting while we explored the area.

(Cross-posted from my site, where there are additional photos: andrewflenniken.com/2025/05/27)

We went up to Kalaloch Beach to see the Tree of Life, and also hit Ruby Beach at sunset. The air at Ruby Beach was filled with mist from the crashing waves, lit golden by the sun. One of the sea stacks had a hole in it, through with the sunlight was positively streaming, and the shot I got of it is now up in my store as Poseidon’s Door.

I also turned my lens on smaller things I found lying in the sand, and got a long exposure night shot to round things out.

I hope your Memorial Day weekend was equally pleasant!

Back in April I had the pleasure of shooting the most recent performance by No Refunds Productions: King Beard.

The show was a hoot, as they always are, and I've pulled a selection of photos together for my portfolio, which you can see here.

If you have a performance coming up in the Seattle area (or elsewhere, if you have the budget for travel expenses), I'd be happy to shoot for you! Reach out to inquire about rates and availability.

Today is World Bee Day, designated by the UN "to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development".

I went back through my archives looking for a bee photo that I hadn't posted before (I post most of the ones I like, because bees are pretty great) and came across this one from last year. Enjoy!

More photos from my visit to the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge last week.  When I went down I was primarily looking for migratory shorebirds, like the Caspian Tern from the prior post, but there were plenty of others.

(Cross-posted from my site, where you can see the other photos: andrewflenniken.com/2025/05/16)

I typically get down to the Refuge once or twice a year, but this was the first time I'd arrived at low tide and stayed long enough for the tide to come all the way in.  It's fascinating watching the little pools in the mud flat grow and connect until, before you realize it, it's no longer a mud flat, it's a little bay.

I drove down to the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge last Friday, hoping to get some shots of migratory shorebirds.  My bookmark for the area on BirdCast had predicted high activity the night before, so I threw on the long lens and teleconverter, grabbed the monopod, and headed out.

(Cross-posted from my site, where you can see the whole sequence of shots: andrewflenniken.com/2025/05/13)

I arrived well before high tide and spent a pleasant few hours ambling through the wetlands and out the boardwalk through the estuary.  There weren't a lot of migratory birds, sadly, but what I did see was pretty great: a Caspian Tern cruising along the estuary looking for a meal.  I was able to get a sequence of shots showing one attempt to pull some lunch from the river.

I'll have another post soon showing the non-shorebird wildlife I saw that day!

Monday saw me getting out of the house to head over to the Union Bay Natural Area at the University of Washington campus.

(Cross-posted from my site, where there are additional photos: andrewflenniken.com/2025/05/07)

We're at the height of migration season now, and the Natural Area is a good place to do some birding.  So I spent a pleasant couple of hours wandering around with the camera, soaking up some much appreciated sun, capturing what I could of the birds I saw.  And not just birds!  Plenty of rabbits and turtles were doing their thing and stayed still long enough to get their photo taken.  The geese and ducks have young now too, in their adorable fluffy phase.

In all, I saw:

Wood Ducks
Anna's Hummingbirds
Canada Geese
Song Sparrows
Osprey
Red-winged Blackbirds
Mallards
Dark-eyed Junco
and, of course, Crows (or possibly Ravens)

I'm particularly happy with the shot I got of the hummingbird, freezing its wings in mid flight.  :)
