A quotation from Mignon McLaughlin

Most of us would try to be noble, if we just had a claque we could depend on.

Mignon McLaughlin (1913-1983) American journalist and author
The Neurotic’s Notebook, ch. 6 (1963)

Whoever understands the of should strive to attain the finest of all that exists. This is but a of opportunities, and the trades within it differ. The common people say: “Seek what is light to carry yet precious in value.” Therefore, the one who is truly should pursue nothing but the most and goals. (From *Sayd al-Khatir* by Ibn al-Jawzi)

A quotation from Moliere

DON LOUIS: No, no, birth is nothing where virtue is not. […] Know that a man of noble birth who leads an evil life is a monster in nature; virtue is the prime title of nobility; I care much less for the name a man signs than for the deeds he does; and I should feel more esteem for the son of a porter who was a true man, than for the son of a king who lived as you do.

Molière (1622-1673) French playwright, actor [stage name for Jean-Baptiste Poquelin]
Don Juan [Dom Juan], Act 4, sc. 6 (1665) [tr. Page (1908)]

I've finally figured out this European nobility fad.

The difference between a marquess and marquis is that a marquis holds a slightly higher nobility because he can fill out a french brassiere. The marquess is jealous of all frenchmen. They both admit that french cheese is dirtier and better.

An archduke speaks disparagingly of both of them.

I spent the bigger part of this morning trying to make sense of the contradicting sources around the origin of the family of priest Heinrich #Bank, who at one point simply called himself #Von_Bank. The origin of his ancestors either was from the #Vorarlberg area or from the #Breslau area (less likely). For the moment, an additional paragraph in his profile has to be sufficient: wikitree.com/wiki/Bank-220#Nob

A quotation from Eric Hoffer

Compassion is probably the only antitoxin of the soul. Where there is compassion even the most poisonous impulses remain relatively harmless. One would rather see the world run by men who set their hearts on toys but are accessible to pity, than by men animated by lofty ideals whose dedication makes them ruthless. In the chemistry of man’s soul, almost all noble attributes — courage, honor, hope, faith, duty, loyalty, etc. — can be transmuted into ruthlessness. Compassion alone stands apart from the continuous traffic between good and evil proceeding within us.

Eric Hoffer (1902-1983) American writer, philosopher, longshoreman
Passionate State of Mind, Aphorism 139 (1955)
