https://c.im/@hanktank61@nerdjoy.social , who enjoys listening to British music from the first half of the twentieth century, recently mentioned the composer Dorothy Howell (1898 -1982).
After the 1919 success of her symphonic poem "Lamia", she became known as the "English Richard Strauss".
I don't much care for this kind of dubbing, as it seems unwittingly to belittle its recipient ; has anybody thought of referring to Richard Strauss as the "German Dorothy Howell"?
In addition, this particular example set this Richard Strauss fan up for disappointment. "Lamia" is OK, but it doesn't hold a candle to the German's symphonic poems.
Then I turned to her Nocturne for Muted Strings and was entranced - I hope you will be too!
