The simple statement presented in the post is the truth. Women in countries like Iran and Afghanistan for example have no choice but to wear it. It is important to remember this and that saying they do have a choice is a denial of basic facts.

Women in countries like Iran have no choice but to wear it. If they don’t, there is the possibility of 15 years in prison and the possibility of a death sentence.

Let’s not forget about the women and girls who live in religious households and are forced to wear it by family.

This is just a handful of problems and injustices that a person may face for leaving Islam. This all especially true if they live in a muslim majority country. However, those that don’t still face the risk of becoming victims of violent crimes, reviving threats, etc. These realities are all painful and heart breaking and no one should have to go through them. Unfortunately, this is the reality for millions of people world wide.

Due to the intense islamophobia that has been happening recently, I would also like to acknowledge that not all ex-muslims have a hard time leaving Islam. This is however, a reality that some do face.

Unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone. Some people in certain countries can be persecuted for leaving their religion, converting to another religion, being atheist or apostasy. (This post will focus ONLY on apostasy)

13 counties carry the death penalty for apostasy. Those countries are Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Mauritania, Maldives, Pakistan, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.

People should be able to renounce their religion without the possibility of death. However, for the residents of these countries, that possibility is not a reality, and they are often forced to live a lie for their own protection.
